What is this & can it live with an Oscar?

Hi,
I'm not sure what kind of fish this guy is, and he's obviously too small right now, but assuming he grows beyond the O's mouth size could they eventually live together?

If I wanted to keep him in a separate tank then, are rainbows the sort of fish that are happiest living with a school of their own kind, or no?

That's a praecox (or dwarf) rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) and it's already an adult. Definitely oscar-food.

These are a shoaling species and do well in groups of 5 or more. They're also a stream fish so, extra flow and aeration are recommended.
