My son recently went on a cub scout fishing trip to a local lake and brought home his catch, a small bluegill. I've kept natives before so this wasn't a big deal. The next morning I noticed a white growth on the dorsal and right pectoral fins. They have grown a little in the last couple of days. I've checked my water quality and it is fine. I've never had any issues with fungus or any other fish diseases in my tanks (knock on wood). Is this something that could spread to other fish? Is is treatable?

It has settled in nicely and has become friends with the convict that I have in the tank. They pal around together and hide in the same spots. It's almost like he taught the new guy what he needs to know. He is eating well already. Other natives that I've had took about a week before they would eat. My son would be devastated if we had to get rid of him. Thoughts?

Fortunately (for me), I don't deal with diseases much, so I can't really advise on treatment, but I just wanted to comment that you got yourself a green sunfish and not a bluegill

agreed, need your PH, and as stated already, that's a green sunfish, and I'm surprised its getting along with something haha. I'd start with a broad spectrum treatment like paraguard or furan 2 and kanaplex together.

I'm guessing your green sunfish is getting this ailment due to all the new stress factors: being hooked; placed into captivity; water condition that is considerably different where it came from (temp, pH, nitrate, and who knows what else)

Is it treatable or will it go away with time?

Like I'd already mentioned, I rarely deal with diseases, so I don't really know. Since it is a wild fish, I would say its probably got a strong immune system and could possibly beat it on its own. However, if it were me, I would probably try some fungus med. Hopefully, someone with more knowledge/experience on diseases can chime in and give you sound advice.

There are many bacterial infections that on the surface, appear to be fungal.
I would not put this fish in my main tank, but in a separate quarantine tank.

I had my doubts about it being a bluegill. The head shape wasn't quite right.

Anyway, the pH is at 6.4.

I would try something mild like Seachem Paraguard. You will have to redose everyday, preferably with doing a water change before each dose.
