Hello everyone I am hoping that someone can tell me if I have a male or female? I'm thinking male, but this is the only one that I've had since I was a kid. As you can see it loves the camera. Thanks guys.

I am by no means a pro but I'm inclined to say female. From the pic the forehead doesn't look large. Granted if it isn't the dominate fish in the tank then it wouldn't be large either.

He's gonna grow up to be a stunner awesome colours at such a young age, similar to what mine looked like at that size except yours is stockier. Awesome fish

Like I said, no expert. What makes you say male? (Not debating it, just curious)

I may be wrong but I think the body colouring and thickness of the orange on fins would "almost" guarantee male. Have seen the odd awesome coloured female though.

I second this.....I too go by the thickness of the orange on the tail fin...couple of years back I had a breeding pair and this clearly was a give away for me....so definitely a male.

Ok neat! Thanks for the info

Thank you guys so much for the info. When he came in I knew that he was the one. His color has been improving and he is growing like a weed, I've had him in my overly planted tank and he has grown from just over an inch and a half to about four in two months.

I go by the blue-green bearding on the face. Females tend to have thicker beards while males have more distinct lines on their beard. The tail is really hit or miss. I have a female with an orange band thicker than my males. And as of the head, the hump thing is 100% genetics, if its there you can get it to be more pronounced by having him be the dominant fish but its all in the genetics.
