I have a 29 gallon glass tank that I would like to use as a sump. It is a typical Aqueon tank. It will be about 2/3 full in operation. For a number of reasons, I need to place this tank more or less directly on a carpeted floor (it is going to be a slightly unusual setup).

I was going to make a "stand" by screwing together four 2x4's in a rectangle to support the rim of the tank (so that it is just the 3.5" width of a 2x4 off the ground). This would then sit directly on the carpet.

Does anyone know if this would be adequate support for the tank? It resembles the top of a typical DIY stand, but I don't know if the legs of those stands have an important structural role beyond just raising up the tank. In particular, I am wondering if I will have enough torsional stability to prevent the tank from cracking.

I had a 100 gallon on two 2x4's laid flat in my closet for a few years before I moved and didn't have any problems. I may have just been lucky I don't know. In your case or in retrospect what about a piece of plywood?

why? if your floor is flexing enough to cause a tank to crack, I wouldn't put a tank on it no matter the stand. if it's just to keep it off the carpet, just use a small section of plywood as that will spread out the weight out better and compress the carpet less as well as being less likely to twist. many peoples sumps sit under the tank on a piece of 1/4' thick (at most) plywood as that's the bottom of their stand.
my 60G 48"x24"x12" sump is in the bottom of the stand, basically on the floor, on 1/8" plywood for about 4 years now with no problems.
