Teach me to Vieja

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Aregentea are nasty. I'm starting to think they do all their violence when the lights go out. In a Vieja tank, they own the night.

Heterospilus are pretty laid back and grow really slow. From what i understamd they are on the smaller side (less than 10 inches) mine doesnt bother anyone infact usually gets picked on.

Also have zonatus and had argentea in the past wouldnt even try to mix them with other cichlids.

Post some pics later

You have the heterospila in with your pearsi right? And now I'm hearing an echo on the argenteas... Really wouldn't try mixing in something as big as 1k gallons?

P.S. Look forward to the pics

you can mix these fish. you just need a big tank, or you grow 'em up from babies. and u always have to be ready to pull ones that get in trouble. "can you mix X with Y?" you always get a question back like "what size tank". it all depends. on all kinds of stuff.

tank size. species. individual's personality. how mature are the fish. how clean is the water. breeding. human traffic in the room where the tank is. how bright are the lights on the tank. all this stuff plays into it.

there's no hard and fast rules. If you told me you had a 500 gallon tank, my answer would still be "you stand a good chance". nobody really knows. try it.

But what most everyone here can agree on is what NOT to do. A Chancho and a Severum won't last in a 55 gallon. I think we could all agree on that. :)

Lol, never heard of a chancho but after looking it up, I'd have to agree =P I am planning on moving my severum and chocolate up to a 75 in 3 months though ^.^ fiancé is asking if we can add anything else... Told her I'd ask around about HRP or geophagus but that's for another time =P

This link has most of the pics. Wouldn't bother posting pics of my zoatus. They are small not much to look at.

Yeah if i had 1k tank maybe i could get some cichlids to live with eachother...my luck i would still have problems. But in tanks i could or do own (300 or less) i probably would try it myself.

I think hets are cool because they dont have the attitude or size the others get. But i guess all fish are different like ragin said only best guesses

Buphy --

Clown loaches. Red Tail Shark. Look at Boesman Rainbow's. Roseline Sharks. Cryptotheros Cutteri (Rapps has some right now). Fish in the Nosferatu genus are very cool. that's my plan for when I clear out my 125.

Pleco's--have you seen the gold nugget pleco's? I used to have one, and I really miss that fish. Got killed by a $5 Gibbiceps from the LFS.

There's lots you can put in a 75 with those fish. You could probably put em in the 55 right now.

The gold nuggets look nice but I really love the L046 zebra plecos. I have some time to think up dither, not gonna have space till I get the 125 in... 86 days? Apparently petsmart does tanks 50% off on Black Friday =D anyways, kinda want Denison barbs but it'd cost abit for a school...

Buphy which vieja do you like best so far ? Theyre awesome fish man

not gonna have space till I get the 125 in....

Don't do that. If you're serious about keeping some of these fish, just don't. I have a 125, and I regretted it about 3 months after I bought it. If you're gonna pop for a 125, spend a couple hundred bucks more for a wider tank. A 125 is 18 inches wide, and it's not good. Get a tank that's 30 inches wide right off--like a 240. At least, spend the exact same money to get a 180 that's 24 inches wide--no extra cost, much better choice.

+1 regret not doing this with the 150...should have just did a 180
