So I pick up my 135 gallon tank on saturday. This will be replacing my 65 gallon and my gf 36 gallon tanks.

Now that I have a big new tank, what the heck should I do with it?!

My current stock in both tanks is:
1X gold severum - very aggressive to other cichlids fine with other fish that don't look like him. Loves to eat any plants that go in the tank
1X banded leporinus - bought this guy 2 weeks ago on impulse. Sounds like it will be too aggressive for my liking and I will probably rehome only about 1.5" right now.
1X red tail shark
1X black beard algae eater
5X black skirt tetras
1X kribensis
1X albino bn pleco
1X glass catfish
2X pearl gouramis

I know I don't want a all cichlid tank. I was thinking a somewhat planted community tank. Maybe a planted oddball tank. The gf said she want's "interesting" fish... whatever that means. I would like a few plecos as I think they are really cool. Maybe a few other larger community fish. Open to suggestions!

My Dennison Barbs do great with my severums, they are very striking to look at and get to a pretty good size, so not your normal "small" community schooling fish. My group of 5 I've had for a couple years now and my biggest is probably close to 5.5 - 6" long. Other possibilities would be Boesemani Rainbows or Congo tetras. There's lots of other options too. These are just some non-cichlids that immediately came to mind.

You won't be able to have a planted tank as long as you keep the Severum. I also like the idea of Rainbows if you're into community fish.

Some ideal for community tank, this is my 150G light planted community tank, all species is normal nothing oddball but if you getting a right group and right numbers for each species then they are look quite cool. Have fun and good luck!

Leporinus definitely will have to go. They grow fast, they grow pretty big, and they grow to be vicious fin nippers!

In regards to "interesting" fish, you can get a shoal of at least 5 clown loaches and/or a single chocolate cichlid. Clown loaches are active, playful, and likes to play dead. Chocolate cich swims at a 45 degree angle.

The severum may not get along with the chocolate they look too similar

I had a green sev and a cholate that had "screaming" matches, but never actually made contact with other. It was comical to see this bluff played out.

I really like the dennison barbs. Would definitely like to get some of those.

I can keep java ferns, anubias and a plant im not sure of the name, but grows like a weed in the tank. That's what I have with the severum right now and he doesn't destroy them too much... Any other kind of plant he seems to eat and destroy within a day.

Ya I shouldn't have bought the Leporinus. But it looked really cool and the first few posts I read online quickly at the pet store said they weren't too bad. Then I read up on them more and instantly regretted my purchase.

I do really like clown loaches. My only worry with them is, they are expensive and I have tried them before and they never survive for me. But it is something I will keep in mind. Thanks!

The chocolate cichlid looks nice, but I am worried my severum wouldn't get along with it. He seems to be aggressive to similar shaped fish.

I'm thinking of building a tank around the severum and one of the smaller types of eel. The eels look really cool and could be a interesting fish. Would angel fish work with the severum?
