New to the Forum! And Severum Stuffs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is one option the smaller severum should be fine. I say should because all fish have there own temperament. In my opinion breeding brings on so many headaches. I do everything in my power to keep my fish from breeding. Be prepared to have multiple tanks ready to go. A breeding pair will claim the whole 65 gallons. All other fish will be cowering in the corner. Breeding cichlids brings out the most psychotic behavior is chichlids it is so frustrating when you have nice peaceful tank and then all of a sudden everything is out of balance.

In order to sell severum you should be able to house the for a 6-8 months so a breeding tank is necessary or they will become food when they adults are ready to breed again. When a breeding pair forms they don't stop. Pretty soon your local market will be flooded.

I'm not trying to say don't do it I just want to give you the heads up I wish people gave me. IMO it will be much more pleasurable to grow out a beautiful adult severum as a center piece and then have a nice school of tetras surrounding it.

You sir, seem to know what you're talking about. And you brought up lots of very good points that I didn't consider. While you didn't intend to scare me, it did in the best way. I'm now completely aware that breeding (severums at least) is not something I want to do and definitely not at this current time. your knowledge has helped me make an informed decision. Thank you.

Your right not intended to scare you but so glad I could help. Severums are a great fish to work off from as a centerpiece. Any idea what you are going to add with him or her?

I haven't decided yet. I'm really leaning toward Honduran red points. I think the blue would be a good contrast against the red severum. Considering he Nicaraguans.
Would angelfish work as a possibility? My hubby mentioned maybe making it a bio trope type of tank.

Hondurans are one of my favorites they will do well. My avatar is a platinum HRP. Since your 65 is only 3ft long I would do those over nics. I know I recommended nics before but they really do need 75 gallons. I forgot 65's were 3 feet. With the HRP's watch out for breeding. The females will have orange on the belly and stay smaller. I used to have a group of 5 I now have narrowed it down to 2 big males.

I don't know much about angels so I cant really advise you on if they will do well or not. They won't do well with the HRP's

Aww rats. I'll have to do more thinking about tank mates then.
Do you know anything about biotropes? Just wondering since you seem to know a bit about severums :)

I do but I never have done one. I try to stick to similar regions but not exact biotopes. To many cool fish out there to narrow myself haha. But I have seen some awesome biotopes.

Off the top of my head if you want a bio tope you could add Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, lots of different types of corydoras, plecos and tetras come from northern SA.

Unfortunately The only plants I know that do ok with severums are from africa. The other plants the severums will eat.

I've kept angels and severums together, 75 and 135 gal tanks, and they got along well, better than I expected before (after many years) I decided to try it. First time I tried it I was prepared to separate them if it didn't work out. Again, tank size is a factor with severums, also individual temperament. So, again, I can't go so far as to guarantee any angels will work with any severums, but it can be done-- it's worked for me and they can also be found together in the wild.

In terms of biotope, red severums are not a wild type, so 'biotope' would have to be in a general rather than a strict sense, there wouldn't be a pariticular, single local habitat to match up to, whether in terms of other species or the finer details of tank decor. But generally, heros species are found in calmer waters, often with submerged branches and roots, maybe some leaf litter, but not necessarily much in the way of aquatic, submerged plants. Their habitat can include sandy river bottom or flooded forest floor to name a couple. In some of their distribution, their habitat would change with the seaons, parituclarly wet/flood season vs. dry season. Some associated species in the wild can be discus, angelfish, some species of geophagus and crenicichla, some species of plecosomus or other catfish, and leporinus-- to name a few.

So you'd have options for a generalized biotope, but be limited by tank size in terms of associated fish to keep together.

LOL... was tired when I posted above, long day of hiking, etc. and now too late to correct the spelling of "particularly". Being a writer, in the informal setting of a fish forum I can live with entering a comma where there should be a semi-colon, as I did above, or dashing off a few quick and inelegant lines, but I really hate missing a spelling typo.

I have 4 angels in with my 2 red severum in my 135 and they do well together besides the occasional chasing off when the angels are spawning.

I know exactly what you mean! I am all about grammar. So when I see people using superficial text acronyms or improper grammar, I can get easily annoyed. Just because you didn't use a pen, doesn't mean that grammar doesn't matter! (Sorry for the rant.) >.<
