also do not be surprised the male kill the female, that tank is just way way to small for keeping jags.

if you still want bread them, get them in at least a 125g. just them. have a divider to separate the male from the female between spawns, and use the 60g for grow/nursery tank, make sure to have pre-filters on your in takes or they will get sucked up.

Ok so at the moment I cannot afford a bigger tank. I was hoping I could sell the fry at 10 bucks each and end up with 5000 bucks for a bigger tank. I have spoken to a few LFS about taking fry from me so buyers are there I just need the fry. But if they are not going to breed successfully and my tank is too small for them to be happy maybe I should get rid of the female and just keep the male alone until I can afford a bigger tank then try again. With regards to not having a fully cycled tank I will be doing water changes everyday until the end of the month or until I get a test kit to monitor the situation.

Honestly I think that would be a bad move. The male is the faster grower and will end up stunted. If your dead set on keeping one the female would be the way better option.

It sucks. However I think it would be best to give them both to someone who is properly equipped until you get the right size tank. Right now though I would do the 50% waterchange a day regimen that was suggested

Looks like that's my only option. I'm not happy that I have to get rid of them both but they will be better off in a bigger tank with someone else until I can get a bigger aquarium and will try again. Thank you all for the great advise.

You can keep one of them if you want. I highly doubt that if you keep one of them and keep nitrates below 20ppm that either one will get stunted as you save up for a bigger tank.
