I just recently added a 72 inch by 28 inch rocky background from the big retailer Universal rocks, and 2 days later my 18 inch, 3 year old peacock bass is dead, along with my 5 year old synodonitis eruptus catfish, and my last 3 fish remaining are gasping for air! My tanks filtration is still running the same, no less since I added the background, also before I added the background I washed it as advised from universal rocks. Any suggestions as to what may have happened and what do you think I should do to save the remainder of my fish?

If you can easily remove the backing, I'd do so; then quickly check the water parameters. If they check out, I'd do a large scale water change anyway, in case chemicals have leached into the tank

Did you by chance move around substrate or decorations that hadn't been moved in a while to fit in the background?

Were your filters off for any length of time while you were installing it?
And/or what did you us to adhere it to the back of the tank?

+2 these are my two guesses, whatever you used to adhere the background to the tank leached into the water or you stirred up your substrate that hadn't been moved in a while and it through all your params off or released some nasty stuff that was under the substrate

I always tell anyone who asks me if they have some doubt. Always go with gut feeling and investigate. So for years your tank was fine and no fish died but the minute you put the background on some die. Makes sense to me that it was the cause.

I am deeply sorry for your lose I get attached to my fish and recently my very large and beautiful red devil died after spawnin with her mate.

something else to add, I am very surprised your featherfin catfish died; they are virtually bulletproof, so that would suggest to me that whatever the problem is, you need to get on it asap
