After nearly two years with no fish....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
slippery slimecoat slippery slimecoat just wanted to give you a heads up on the Scats. I had 3 originally as well all approx. 3 inches each but in a 4' 75 they fought like mad. While not actually causing damage to one another they chased and stressed each other out enough that two where hugging the surface sideways and one wouldn't eat. Doing a quick check on here I only found one mention of them and conspecific aggression mentioned by Oddball. Oddball stated they where better kept in a group of at least 5 or solitary. This coincided with my experience so I bought more for a total of 7 and they calmed down enough or at least the aggression is spread out enough that they're all doing well. So while I hope it doesn't happen to you know if you do encounter such aggression you'll know it's common and what you can do about it.

I loved my loach tank back in the day. Was fun finding the more rare ones around here. Silver dollars are cool too, a pike cichlid would be cool if you can make it work with everything else. Is your tank 5x2x2? If so, maybe located a baby florida gar and a couple vulture catfish, maybe a teacup stingray, small orino pbass. I bet if you got those all as babies you could keep them for the better part of 2 years, maybe then you will be able to upgrade? Just thinking of monsters that don't get massive and have a bit slower growth rate. Clown knife comes to mind too but I find they grow pretty quick.

Thanks for the heads up koltsixx. That was a concern, but was hoping I can get away with three. Had someone else tell me I should be fine, but I'm certainly still concerned. If I see aggression, I'll pick up a couple more as long as I can still find them. Was also a little worried about eventual overstocking with having more than three. They grow quite slow though, right?

No problem, Monster Aquarium has them for $100 a piece other then that if you're willing to pay a little more Jeff/Tangled Up In Cichlids and Ichiban still have some. I've never kept them till now so I'm unsure about growth but if I remember correctly I think Oddball had his for several years and they only got to around 6 inches or so during that time.

Sorry by the way Rob, don't mean to derail your thread.

Yeah, mine are coming from Monster Aquarium. Supposed to ship today. Maybe I'll try calling and see if I can add a couple to the order. And yes, sorry for derailing...

Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda!! You Shoulda stopped by my house, on your way to FL. I Woulda given you that 275 acrylic w/wet-dry filter. Then, you Coulda had a larger tank, for little expense, to start you back up again. SMH

When I came home, I was in my Fusion. I had no where to put it.

I agree, I set up a tank with small schooling fish. It looks nice for a few days but that's it. No personalities, no real growth, no aggression. Nuff said

Freshwater Archers!

You're son is adorable. Starting your tank back up will be very healing for you. I know it was for me. Good luck!

Honestly Rob... I think you will get 'bored' of the stock you are listing.. in.. 4 months tops! After you get bored.. you will be looking for monsters again. Just my two cents. I turned my 1000 gallon bowfront into a Discus tank, and although it looks great... I don't even give it 5 mins per week of my time. I hate that tank! lol
