Anyone else feeding Mussels to their SA/CA ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can feed as much as fresh seafood as you like, just make sure to freeze first (to kill most nematodes etc - notice I said most) and then supplement with B1 2-3 times a week. Boyd Vitachem is a pretty good vitamin supplement.
What's your feeling on home made food without vitamin supplements? I do beef heart, tilapia and sometimes shrimp, with spinach, peas egg yolks to bind it. We do add spirulina and ahstaxian(sp?) For color boost. I feel like this mix should cover most nutrients. It gets frozen after processing so it's easy to portion out, didn't realize that helped with nematodes. I don't buy pretty frozen anything.

My gut feeling about what you are doing is eye mazing :)

Home made good food. So must be good for aquaria.

By the way what is pea egg yolk ?

Raw peas contain anti-nutritional matter, they need to be processed (cooked) before feeding to fish, just as soybeans etc need to be. At least if one is feeding as a regular staple. Better off feeding aquatic based plant matter, not terrestrial based. Beef heart is no bueno in my books, and I personally would not feed any form of mammal meat to a fish.

I cook the peas, and use a minimal amount of the beefheart. As I understood, they need a little bit of fat. However if you think I could cut it out of the mix I will. It didn't seem great to me to use terrestrial meat.

Peas and egg yolks. It only takes an out 2 yolks for a 3 pound batch of food. It's a binding agent

All fish require fatty acids for proper growth and metabolic functions, but the fat should be sourced from marine foods, such as fish, shrimp, mussels, etc, not mammal meat. Same for amino acids, the building blocks of protein.

And just to cover your bases with the various vitamins and minerals, I would consider presoaking the food at least 2-3 times a week in something like Boyds Vitachem.

I have fed cooked mussels, raw clams, shrimp fish pieces and bloodworms/clam worms but I don't make it a habit. the only habit I make other than fish food is night crawlers.
