Sponges and a 265

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I know what I'm going to do. Going to make a DIY like suggested above. I was thinking about combining 4 Hydro 5 Pro sponges on one PVC pipe on one side in the corner and the same thing on the other side. Should I use the same PPI on all the sponges or mix them up? Remember I have big fish, South and Centrals.

Now I need to decide if I want to use an air pump or a powerhead. I'm wanting to buy one pump that will power the other 3 tanks, the 4th tank is on the other side of the basement so would need to get another for that side.

Used to have two of these but I sold them, wish I had them. A 6 way valve should work to power the three tanks.

See any issues with this?

I also see some pumps rated at 400 gph, etc. but how do you convert something like a linear pump that produces 4.4 psi of air? If I was to install a linear pump, run 6 air lines to the sponges, is there a way to convert it to see how many gph each sponge is receiving?

Try hooking up your canister filters inline and see if you can run it on one pump. You can also use a HOB refugium and put your media in there. There are both ones that run on a water pump and one that runs on an air pump.

Depending on how the tanks are setup you can tie multiple tanks to one sump and use a small DC pump to bring the water back to multiple tanks.

What kind of lighting are you using? That might be a better way of reducing your power usage.

I used LEDs on a timer on all my tanks.

I went ahead and bought the luft pump, got it for $40 on EBAY, ordered 8 Hydro V sponges and 20 check valves and a 12 way air valve.

I was also thinking about added one HOB to each tank but filled with the ceramics that are currently in the canisters just for some extra bio.

Will stack 4 sponges on top of each other in both corners and will get some PVC and drill a bunch of holes in it and get some elbows.

Hopefully this works out the way I'm thinking. If it works out well, then in a month I will convert all my tanks over and sell the canisters for fish and tank money :)

Dont be a cheap ass and give you tank proper filtration and flow. If $3 a month is going to kill you shut down a smaller tank when you get a larger on. The money you spent on sponge filters, pump and tubing could have paid for the electric you canister uses for years.

And just where exactly do you live that electricity is so cheap that you can make a useless statement to make against my project?

JasonG, ignore the troll, post some pictures of how you set this up, and let us know what your stock levels and water parameters are, sponge filters are often underated, lots of breeders and wholesalers only run sponge filters in their setups

So far the check valves arrived, rest should be here next week sometime. I will keep the sponges in the tank along with the canisters for a while before I remove the canisters and put them on the other tanks in case I need them back or dont have enough sponges. But after all the reading I have done and tanks I've seen, big and small, I shouldn't have any issues. I've been keeping the stock levels normal for the past couple months and will continue to do so. I will also be using the test kit to test the parameters very often and recording my findings.

What wholesalers use air powered sponge filters? Breeders use them because fry produce little waste and can't handle flow well.

Looking foward to see how it turns out. Are you going to use the HOB filter? I think you should stick with your original plan and only use sponges.

powerheads?
