16 Year Old Clown Loaches Stunted Growth?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've personally seen water parameters (and/or quality) play a part in growth.
Yep,I wonder if the "hidden tank" was plumbed into the main display system or if it was equipped with it's own filtration?

I probably wasn't clear with my first comment. I wonder if such things as ph, TDS, etc are a factor as well. Like I was saying, although my mother may not have the same tank maintenance practices as I do, she also has a completely different water source. But with that said, my ph runs high for clowns (7.6-7.8) and I see good growth. Don't know specifics of my mother's water..

I have to agree with this. Those fish come from water I'd have to imagine would have ALOT different chemical/tds components than our stateside well water. I can speak on the experience with that actually that would support the argument. I have a NA native tank, and these fish come from the same water I change out their tanks with. They all grow like weeds, no matter the species I get massive sunfish, bass, pickerel, catfish, etc. Now switch that over to my poly/Asian tank and the growth rates in some of the WC fish are definitely less impressive, my loaches included. Their tank water is kept pristine but my loaches have been in the 150 for a year now with almost no significant growth in the larger ones. My smaller loaches have put on some size but nothing like what my NA native YOY sunnies and bass put on in the same amount of time. Granted they have wildly different growth rates but I would have expected to see a bit more out of loaches thus far.

I think it's hard to compare clowns growth to any fish besides other clowns. They grow extremely slow compared to most all other fish even when their in "good" conditions.

right but even still there should be more growth than what I'm seeing.

What type of growth have you seen?
not enough haha. I'd say easily <1" in all of them. the small ones being the ones I'd say MAY be approaching an inch from when I got them, and now that I think about it I've actually had all of them approx. 2 years. not 1.

all healthy, all eat like pigs. diet consists of tilapia, carnivore and nls ther a+ pellets, silversides, krill, earthworms, and everything soaked in boyds vitachem.

Well, size matters haha. If their less than 6" I'd certainly agree that is slow. Above 6", and that may be a touch slow. 8" and above and that would be good growth imo.

they are all below 6". the 2 big ones I bought at approx. 5", and if they've grown at all, its immeasurable. I truly believe it has to do with my water's chemical composition differing from the native range of the fish. I've always wondered about that so I figured I'd share what I believed to be possible evidence here haha.

P.S. my nitrates are never above 10, and they receive 2x water changes a week without fail.

the biggest 2 are getting that general "football" loach shape to them, so they are definitely eating enough haha
