Most cichlids would grow faster and are more aggressive when small. They'd outcompete the army for food and/or beat him up and possibly kill him. Once the army gets bigger, he will recognize the cichlids as his natural prey items from the wild.
what's should the size of the atf be before I introduce an armatus in? I'm only worried that if the armatus is too small, the atf will get aggressive towards it! should both of them be of the rough size?

An atf should be at least 10" or so before trying to introduce an army. The army will catch up to and pass the atf in a few months. It'll probably take a year or so to get the atf to thay size.
