How not to start your morning..

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Could've been my dog maybe. All other fish in the tank are ok, he's in with 5 bichir that are the same size but thinner, odoe, and a curu both being larger. The curu could've maybe gave a little chase and he hit something. Or he gets into quick squirmishes with the odoe sometimes, maybe he tried to bite him and it didn't work out well. I just got home from school so I'm gonna put him in a bucket to try and take a closer look at him. I hope it's only dislocated, I really like this mala, he has developed a nice green sheen and his fins have a slight red hue. And he's usually in the vertical striped pattern, unlike a lot of malas that usually have the thick bar going across. If it's broke, there's no way he'd be able to survive I assume? If it's dislocated how would I go about putting it back and will this start happening often now that it's happened once?
Hard to say for sure but it could heal....it might not set back properly though.

I don't have clove oil sadly though. He's gonna be stressed for a little while I take a look
LOL,I have no experience with that so I can't speak on it.....never used the stuff.

Upon better inspection, it looks to be torn, but the other side is also moved over, he closed it and I didn't wanna get to rough and make it worse trying to open it and move it over.
I have him in the bucket with a low water level. What do you guys think?

That does look like a tear but the fish moving his mouth sounds like a good thing.Good call not bothering with it and risking further damage....let him alone to heal on his own.

Hospital tank out of the question?
I would agree with that.It could rest there stress free while it heals, lessening the chance of any infection sneaking in.

I have a 10 and 20L but they're not set up cause I don't use them, should I set one up? The 20 has sand and Dw in it already, just no water and I'd have to clean the filter. Also no top or heater. If I use say 10-15 gallons and the rest be from my tap water, would that be ok? I put him back in the main tank it looks to be straighter already, he jumped out of the bucket when I put him back in. image.jpeg

I'm not sure if feeding him is smart or possible right now, at least before seeing some improvement. I would throw him in the biggest tank ya got with a piece of driftwood. If you have an hob on the main tank you can throw it on there otherwise I'd use as much tank water as you can feasibly use just so he doesn't experience a nasty ph swing, or something of that nature. I'd leave it as bare as possible, one filter, one heater and one piece of driftwood. Let him brood with clean water. The good news is since you don't have to feed him he shouldn't make the water disgusting that fast. Other than these basics I'm not sure what to do other than let nature take its course.
