Clown loach clicking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine travel as a pack throughout the tank...a gang of 9 clicking clowns...from biggest to smallest...
especially during feeding and nonstop when I throw a cucumber in the tank.
Then they will "stack up" in a corner like fanned out cards....allnon their sides...

I might pick some up! Trying to get mine to feed, difficult because they are shy and my other fish are voracious!
It took mine a week or so to really get interested in it. But once they did, they went nuts for them. My clowns used to hide a lot more and were shy when I had them with a large NTT and oscar. When I switched them out for fish like silver dollars or filament barbs, the clowns were much more comfortable and hang out all over the tank all the time now.

I kept a group of 15 by themselves in a 125, their behaviour was quite different than what one typically sees in comm tanks. Each loach had it own sleeping spot that they used every night. They clicked every night when being fed, it didn't matter what I fed them.

I find this interesting. I've definitely seen different behaviors from them depending on their tankmates, and at one point wondered how they'd be by themselves. Ultimately decided my 2' tall tank would look a bit empty without mid/top swimmers.

I have a few set ups over the years that I miss, that was one of them. The good thing was they went to friends tanks (300-500 gallons) who had far more space for them to maximize in. I currently have 5 juvies with oddball patterns growing out in a comm tank. Those were recently given to me by one of my friends that I gave the last group to a few years back. It's hard to resist free clown loaches.

Yeah, free loaches would be hard to pass up. I had 10, but gave away four to make space for my remaining 6. I found it's easy to get carried away with getting a lot of clowns with how slow they grow and the interaction of all of them the more you have. Even with only 6 now, they have completely maxed out my 4'x2'x2'. Have a 5'x2'x2' to set up. The extra foot should help. Just wish I had space in that room to go with a 6 footer because I know they could use it.
