Mysterious deaths in well established 300 Gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Another canister filter with modified hoses to fit your tank, that's the only solution I have since I see the tank is on the floor so I'm guessing drilling the tank and getting a sump are out of the question.

I'm of the opinion that koi don't do well in a tropical setting and that your going to risk your aro or koi stressing because there's no happy medium temp. I would sell the koi or put them in a pond because they are on the fast track to becoming feeders. I would also find a proper cichlid pellet if you intend to raise them, cichlids and especially severum need a varied diet and they are quite partial to veggies too. That high protein diet would likely lead to hith which can kill it, and that might explain why it's the lone sacrifice because it was more prone to hith than your other fish.

The only problem with that theory is that to the best of my knowledge it would be very apparent, and you probably would notice long before the fish died. True to its name hole in the head disease (hith) will manifest as pitting on the face of the severum. Water quality plays a big part of hith as well so if you're going 2 weeks no water change and feeding a protein based diet then you could see this condition deteriorate quickly.

Get in the habit of testing your water so you can diagnose problems and make it very simple to combat quality problems.
Yes Now after learning the hard way seems u are right, feeding different types is a problem for me as all the fish there dont eat everything, with Lucy (My Arowana raised to 21 inches from a mere 2 inches when i got him, maybe sometimes we pay him and his requirements a lil more attention this neglecting the other mates, I got to gind out a solution to this. All the fish there are amicably in a cordial relation with each other however their requorements may be different. Will have to find a solution or give away the rest of the fish I believe for our Silver Arowana. I am attaching a pic of the Arowana from Feb 2014 you will realize why our sentiments are kore towards him, although we did love the sevrums as well and all were raised together and now after 10 months suddenly something went wrong...still searching for the answer. Thanks a lot for guiding.

thanks another filter is on my cards now very soon and as most of you told me here and probably absolutely right that my filter capacity may be falling short. Well now I gotta do this after reaching home in the next 15 days, I am a mariner so my wife takes care of all of this, as soon as I am off and back home will be getting one more filter for this.

Okay
I agree on this but see my tank is a custom built with glass tops as well, all the glass are 12 mm in thickness and its really dificult to fit something else, do let me know if there is any other solution to this?
Hello; When I use my very old lights (from the 1970's), I simply place them on the top of a glass cover. This is often not very elegant but does keep the moisture from getting into the lights and then dripping back into the tank.

Its a Fluval equivalent of another brand I have to check it out will let you knw, as I said m not home gotta check with my wife on this...get back to u and also m planning soon on another gilter as suggested here by many

Looking at the picture that appears to be the only filter you have. I'm going to guess your parameters are out of whack. There aren't a ton of fish in there but without maybe enough biofilter capacity you may be looking at a minicycle here.

I suspect this too, that as your fish got bigger; the bioload has tipped the balance of what your water changes were handling before, nitrates are possibly very high by this point etc

Hey thanks joining MFK has been really helpful now for me but a bit too late before the disaster happened, well now I got to get some things right, true all of them are rapidly growing here with the Arowana crossing 21 inches dunno how much more for him to go...so do u suggest I need another filter and frequent bio media changes right??

I would grab yourself a testing kit, the API Master Kit is a very good buy, if you can do this asap and post your parameters, this would be best.

If you can't access a kit for a few days, it doesn't hurt to do extra water changes in the meantime :) But yeah, in all likelihood you'll be looking at increasing water changes, or posting what filtration you are running to see if it has enough media to handle the bioload, Idid you post your filtration set-up? :)

Hi Predatorkeeper87 yes but a lot of thought and planning goes into any modification in my tank, as you see it has a glass top cut in two pieces, with holes on each side, so i have to modify the piping system full if I gotta fit another filter, OR can I REPLACE with a larger capacity filter, the present one is 1200 litres per hour...any idea how muh capacity is right for my 300 gallons (990 litres) tank?

Guys I will soon post my filtration set up, grab a new test kit and post the parameters as well as soon as m back home for now, and let u guys know further. Thanks a ton for being so informative, learnt quite a lot whoch I was unaware of till now...
