Very Dark Turqoise Discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 discus is usually not a great idea... you usually wind up with one very dominant and one bullied. Discus unlike other fish when they are bullied it does not mean they need to be constantly chased... they get spooked stop eating and darken up. You could try adding a few more to disperse the aggression but before you do that.. what else is in the tank? Lots of things can cause discus unseen stress.
I'd like to get some more discus like a group of 6 or so after the holidays. Currently they are housed with 2 silver angelfish, 1 geophagus redhead, sterbai Cory cats, and rummy nose tetras. All of which don't pay much attention to the discus.

That is probably a good idea but doesn't help you now... could be the angels or the geo stressing him (geos can cause problems with discus contrary to most accounts) and it may not even be aggression just there aggressive presence. The best way i describe discus is that they are moody... some deal with other species well some don't some play nice with each others some won't . Discus are a great fish to keep but you will always be tinkering to keep them all happy. i have a tank of wilds at the moment and have the same issues... and have kept lots of domestics in the past. can you separate the week one to get him fattened up?

Discus do best in groups of 5+. They are also recently sensitive to water quality. For juvies anything under 3-4 inches you want to keep nitrate below 10ppm.

Getting new discus to eat, in my opinion, is the hardest part about keeping them. You should talk to the LFS or breeder to find out what they were eating before. Garlic guard will help if you need to feed them medication.

Discus also need water above 81F I keep mine at 83F.

Common practice is to grow out 5-8 juvies in a 55 with daily water changes.

As others have said they spook really easy. Causing stress. A low traffic area if the house is best for new discus.

The best scenario is that you move them to their own grow out tank and when they are adults at about 5inches reintroduce them to the community.

I actually got the two to replace and EBJD I had in with them for a very short period of time due to him constantly on their tails spooking them all over the tank. I immediately pulled him out and reluctantly sold him back to the LFS and got the geo (which seems to be best friends with the discus compared to their behavior with my EBJD). I do agree though the tank mates could be stressing the discus and I've set a 40 breeder up for my other larger EBJD but am seriously considering growing my discus out in it.

I most likely will pull them out and out them in a 40 breeder that I intended my EBJD to go in. I'd love to see these guys get their max size, hopefully around 6 inches and I know that wouldn't be possible in a planted tank unless I want to do 50% daily water changes (which I do not).

I tried growing out five discus in a 40g. Make sure they have plenty places to hide, but that you can also pick up for easy vacuuming. I didn't have success. I couldn't get them to eat. They were scared all the time and even when I was cleaning the tank I never saw any poop only uneaten rotting food. I set up a spare 75g and now they are very very happy discus (At the time I ruined my 55g with the wrong silicone so I was in the process of fixing it otherwise I would have used that).

When I was pushing my little guys from 1-2inch to 3-4 I was doing 75% water changes daily. Now I'm doing about 50% daily. The difference has been never seeing a blip of nitrates to seeing nitrates at 5ppm-10ppm. Will such a small amount affect growth? I don't know I haven't been keeping discus for years and years but it's definitely easier on me.

Is your PH stable from tap to tank? Or is the PH different when it's running out of the tap compared to after it has gasses off for a couple of hours?

Also you should try to feed five times a day. (Small amounts more frequently)

You should seriously consider getting at least three more discus. I'm getting in my last two discus tomorrow bringing me to 8 for a 75g. If you're dead set on doing a community then you REALLY should have at least 5 so they can school together for security. Two discus in a big tank with other fish is asking for trouble. Unless you have a pair... but then the OTHER fish are in trouble haha.

All in all discus do best in discus only tanks with like cardinal tetras and corydoras.

I'm planning on keeping the 40 bare bottom with some penny wort for floating top cover. I've looked at several online sources to pick up 5-6 more discus, the best deal I saw was on Macsdiscus.com where he has a 6 discus variety deal for around $180. I'm hoping to do that once he gets those back in stock and when I have a little extra cash.

I buy from Discus Hans. Haven't bought them anywhere else other than the LFS (The ladder was really poor stock probably going to have to cull two of the runts eventually).

That's good though you're on the right track.
