Are Geophagus Altifrons stripes blue?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The color is usually blue but it's a highly reflective, iridescent blue, so aquarium lighting frequently makes the stripes look like LED lights. Here are some of my geos.

Earth eaters in general are some of my favorite cichlids to keep.
Beyond looks, I like their social structures, and interaction. For most I had, a group of 5-7 of the same species worked well in a 6ft tank. And if kept in a group, would not be aggressive with other species I would also keep in the tank.

Although most Geophagus would fit nicely into a 6 ft tank, for Acarichthys it seemed too small, once they matured.
The cool water Gymnogeophagus really sparked my interest over the last few years though, they, and Central American eartheaters fit better into my normal harder water conditions, than the Amazonian species, which seemed to be prone to HITH in my high TDS content water.

And I found the Geos very similar counterparts, the eartheating species of Central America, to also be of similar temperament, if kept in large groups.

My favorite out of Gymnogeophaghus is balzanii :)

Gymno balzani is also some of my favorites, I kept the Uruguayan strain from Bella Union. They did very well in unheated tanks, although did not do quite as well in as cold water, as the more southern Uruguayan species I was able to keep at temps in the 50sF in my basement in winter.

Wow your like the earth eater King, LOL... So you breed all these earth eaters? Or are they just for looks? And I had no idea Central America had earth eater cichlids, that's really interesting.
