Omg even petsmart doesn't even know. Same damn fish in three petsmart around me. I ask them they said no idea but we're selling them as whatever tank they're in.

To me looks like red devil some actually look like bp but to be honest one petsmart had one at 3 inches and looked weird but different

This is a small firemouth. Looks similar.View attachment 1156772

I am sorry to call you out on this but similar to what? If anything your picture only proves that fish in question is not a firemouth at all. Great picture for comparison though.

Below are midas cichlids being sold by ThatPetPlace @ http://www.thatpetplace.com/midas-cichlid-amphilophis-citrinellus-263198?sc=18&category=2865

This looks most similar to the fish in question, IMO.

I thought it looked similar to young firemouth because of side markings and red under its throat but it does look similar to the midas pics you posted.

I used to breed Midas and red devil and still have tons of fry and yes you're right looks very similar! There is something off on these petsmart ones though but if I were to label it probably be a red devil but even at 3" I saw one same color which makes me believe it's not. For those who have grew out fry by that age you get color. Usually 1 inch you see some color coming in but look at these have no color nothing.

My petsmart has the same ones I was actually going to buy one just to see what it would be but decided didn't want to spend 7.99 on their asking price for a damn blood parrot ( clearly wasn't)

Petsmart, Petland, Petco and others use commercial breeders that only breed for quantity using cost effective methods, meaning, the bare minimum it takes to raise fry. They only need to get their fish to a sell-able size then it's the distributors' problem. They don't care about proper identification only that the fish breed. Best example are Red Texas. These fish are more than a texas crossed with a parrot and are definitely not F1 hybrids. But if you were to buy one from Petland, their commercial breeder definitely just bread a texas and a parrot together and sold the F1 hybrid crosses as "Red Texas".

The flip side is that sometimes the commercial breeders dont even know what they have. The stores usually name the fish whatever the distributor named them. I remember a Petland near me was selling beautiful koi as large feeders. I nearly cleared out the whole tank :D
