Go to your local Petsmart (or other LFS), buy a $6 MiDevil and enjoy every second of raising it. Although they're not going to be true 100% Red Devils, they will exhibit the same interaction, aggression and behavior as a "pure" RD, Midas, etc. If you want to spend more money on a "pure" strain, there are several good online options out there (i.e. Jeff Rapps). In my 20+ years in the hobby, no fish compares to the Amphilophus family in regards to personality, aggression, attitude and fearlessness. They truly are "wet pets" in every sense of the word. I have to say that I respectfully disagree with the above comment about 1 fish in a tank being boring. I love the fact that my large MiDevil has his own 90G to call his home and dominate anything/everything that gets too close.
I've kept and raised several Amphilophus species over the last decade. Below, is a picture of my current MiDevil "Griswold". He was likely a store bought $6 fish from a chain pet store. He is full of personality, intelligence and aggression. I literally have to wear thick "aqua gloves" when I'm doing wc's, so that he doesn't rip my fingers open. If you want an aggressive/interactive fish, you can't go wrong with these.
