Go to your local Petsmart (or other LFS), buy a $6 MiDevil and enjoy every second of raising it. Although they're not going to be true 100% Red Devils, they will exhibit the same interaction, aggression and behavior as a "pure" RD, Midas, etc. If you want to spend more money on a "pure" strain, there are several good online options out there (i.e. Jeff Rapps). In my 20+ years in the hobby, no fish compares to the Amphilophus family in regards to personality, aggression, attitude and fearlessness. They truly are "wet pets" in every sense of the word. I have to say that I respectfully disagree with the above comment about 1 fish in a tank being boring. I love the fact that my large MiDevil has his own 90G to call his home and dominate anything/everything that gets too close.

I've kept and raised several Amphilophus species over the last decade. Below, is a picture of my current MiDevil "Griswold". He was likely a store bought $6 fish from a chain pet store. He is full of personality, intelligence and aggression. I literally have to wear thick "aqua gloves" when I'm doing wc's, so that he doesn't rip my fingers open. If you want an aggressive/interactive fish, you can't go wrong with these.

I have never seen an amphilophus reach much more than twelve inches. I have heard reports of some reaching 16 to 18 inches. Is this true? Has anyone ever owned or seen one bigger than 15 inches?

I agree been raising and breeding midas/ midevils/ red devils for about 7 years. My local pet shop carries amarillo amph and might get a pack of those to grow out. I sold my 16 inch midas recently and I do miss him but I have his kids the biggest adult is 8 inches. I kept a creamsickle as well. If your local to chicago I have about 40-50 midevils fry. My male was a midas and female a creamisicle. Both F1 bought from a reputable person from GCCA.

They can and will surpass 12", assuming they're in good health and have adequate space. If you've ever been to the Shedd Aquarium, you will see that these fish are far larger than 12". Some of them are 15"+.

When I sold my Midas it was 15.75 inches I just say 16 inches. Also Manu is right and I live in Chicago I personally seen monsters at the shedd. I bought my Amp 7 years ago at exactly 11.5 inches. In 6 years he grew 4 inches which is slow but a fish really never stops growing. For two years he had a 200 gallon to himself and his wife because he killed off the rest of the stock. 1500 fry every month for about 2 years straight until the female said no and she got the death sentence from him. I have sold many fry and currently have tons of fry left. Some very small some 8 inches.

The female is 7 inches or so in this picture. The male is huge look at him.

I personally have seen many amp species above 12 inches.

Then maybe something smaller would be more suitable for life in a 75.15+inches is a big fish.

But that takes a while. I assume that 7-9" is in the first year, and maybe a foot or a bit bigger in 2. Then it will slow down.

As the person who had a 16" said, the growth slows down.

As for why i dont like the Angels-

Not a personality thing. Ive actually had them for a while (1.5 week) and they already nibble at my fingers. Which surprised me, as they warmed up incredibly fast.

Might still keep one of the nicer ones.

But i thought maybe i would like the peaceful tank, where i didnt have to worry too much about aggression.

Ive found that i really like the glass-banging behavior that my Texas has (i still have him, he is in a smaller tank for a bit until i get a 40B. Dont want to part with him) and the Severum/Angels just dont have that.

So a wet-pet it is, i think. I dont want to do the Carpinte because it is a bit small to fill up the tank alone IMO.

Would a male Jag work for a while? I know they dont grow too fast in the first place and they slow down. And not all of them get huge. I mean, between genetics, different diets and different environments before i get them, they cant all be able to grow to 14"+ even in a big tank.

I am very on top of WC.

What ya think?
