So I was recalling the Blue Eyed Panaque, which for all intents and purposes is unavailable in the hobby. I recall the one and only time I seen one in the flesh, and it was utterly magnificent; it was in an airport's huge aquarium tank, and definitely commanded presence!

That must have been at least 15 years ago, so I just wondered.

Would be a shame not to keep one of those 16 inch beasts someday

Unavailable?....a few members here have them and one has an active thread going on his.
I was under the impression that they were still collected but very rarely for different reasons.

Do you know the reasons why? I've heard its due to dangerous warring territories in Colombia, and some more outlandish claims that the habitat was deliberately poisoned/destroyed; but nothing substantial.

Those are two reasons that I have heard,or read and the former seems to be the more believable of the two.The construction of dams could also have played a part in their scarcity.

like plecoking2010 said, john have them and he has the best price for them than you can find anywhere else in the U.S. They are not as rare as they're used to be. However, the L282 which is the fish that I want has become more unavailable lately and their price had gone up to the point that liveaquaria.com put l240 up for sale as l282 to make scam money.

I had one back in the 90's @ $40. It was about 8-9 inches. Little did I know how much they would cost nowdays. Same with Zebras...I paid $35 for one back then too.

they can be gotten but mostly larger sizes.. from what I have heard the original place they were collected was poisoned... and the second location is heavily infested with drug operations making collection of hem tougher. MikebNJ MikebNJ
