Does anyone have a whole home water filtration system and how does it affect your fish ?

I have well water and it goes through a whole house filtration system, including a softener. This softened water is what I've been using, for the past 4 years since I've returned to the hobby, on all my tanks. There are those who advise against it (although they give no concrete evidence why you shouldn't), but I haven't notice any issue with any of my stock which includes: New World cich; Old World cich; Asian: NA natives

Forgot to mention why I have this filtration system. My water has trace arsenic(gross alpha?) and radon. The water softener is for the arsenic. There's an aerating chamber for the radon. Also installed an R/O for drinking

Thx xraycer xraycer

How often do you have to change the filtration media. Forgive me if im using idiotic terminology.

Also do you have to adjust your prime/safe dosage. Im assuming the filteation would have some chlorine or something.

I dont yet know what is in the water only heard there maybe nitrates so this is all preliminary

If its well water, there shouldn't be any chlorine/chloramine, so no need for dechlorinator.

The only filtration media my system is a mechanical media for the sediments coming from the well, and the resin in the softener. About 200lb of salt is added on a monthly basis to recharge the resin. The resins life span is about 7-8 years. The sediment filter is replacement is dependent upon how much sediment your well kicks up.

There should be local water testing laboratory near you that can test for home purposes. Its typically around $100. I'm surprise you didn't get a well water report when you bought the house

Your local water authority must send you a yearly water quality report where it would list almost anything they can detect in the water they supply.

I am on well water and run everything, both home and business water, through an RO. My system has the capacity to produce 10,000+ GPD of RO water of which I have been using 3,000-6000 daily for the past 4 years (continuous 24/7 water change in all my tanks and ponds).

So the sequence is:

well (~1500 ppm TDS (low end brackish), ~600 ppm out of the TDS is hardness, rest must be salinity, 1/4-1/2 ppm ammonia, tannin (yellow), sulfites (strong sulfur smell)) -->
sediment filter -->
RO membranes (~30 ppm TDS) -->
charcoal + calcite filter (calcite must have been spent a long time ago though) -->
another charcoal filter -->
added directly into four sumps for my 12 tanks (110 ppm TDS, 1-2 drops KH, same GH).

Altogether ~10-15 five-gal pails of seashells (thank you Naples beaches) are added to the sumps to gain a bit a hardness and minerals back (TDS raised to ~150 ppm, 2-3 drops KH, 4-5 drops GH), otherwise the water is way too soft for the vast majority of fish.

We drink the same water and use it for everything in the house - 110 ppm TDS, 1-2 drops KH, same GH (of course not out of the sumps but split off before).

The house isnt built yet nor is the well. Wife talked to a couple of companies and was told that the well would be tested before the system was built.

Assuming and hoping the only issue is nitrates the resins are what removes it ?

Do you guys know if how deep your wells are ? Do you guys have submersed pumps or above ground jet pumps ? Was told the above ground jet pumps are not good.

I don't believe there is any resin for nitrate removal for home water filtration system....as far as I know.

My house is 11.5 years old and came with the submersed pump installed. I believe the above ground pumps are fairly new. Whether the above ground pumps are good or not, I haven't heard either way.

My well is 100' deep with submerged pump I just run a micron and carbon filter. I know my brother has a brand new house with well water and his nitrates are high right out of the faucet

So none of the home filtration systems remove nitrates ? Wtf i dont want my kids drinking that crap. I have no idea if there are nitrates but i assume their are since there is allot of farm land in the area

Wife was wrong the pump is submersed and the well is 75 ft deep
