So none of the home filtration systems remove nitrates ? Wtf i dont want my kids drinking that crap.
That's why I set up a RO unit at the kitchen sink. This is the water we use for drinking and cooking.

I have well water and it goes through a whole house filtration system, including a softener. This softened water is what I've been using, for the past 4 years since I've returned to the hobby, on all my tanks. There are those who advise against it (although they give no concrete evidence why you shouldn't), but I haven't notice any issue with any of my stock which includes: New World cich; Old World cich; Asian: NA natives
Well, thank you for the info, but I am aware what a softener does, as explained in my other posts on this thread. However, my softener was installed for the sole purpose of removing gross alpha and not so much for removing calcium. I use soften water because for me its just practical. Plus my water also carries with it radon, and it is for this reason I don't use direct well water for w/c....I don't want radon gas inside my home. It is just practical and convenient for me to use this "softened" water, which I have been using for the past 4 years since I've reentered the hobby. There's no issue with my fish as far as I can tell.Since you don't seem to be aware a domestic water softener is designed to remove the carbonate hardness from the water. The calcium and what not that would eventually buildup in the pipes. It then replaces this with salt. So you are left with water with a lot of salt and very little capacity to buffer itself. Something I would never recommend anyone use for their fish.

Would you suggest a buffer to counter act the effects and would tannins or peat act as a buffer in this scenario? Does this salt show up the same as normal salt with a tds meter?
