My son found our long nose gar Clyde looking like this tonight. Don't know how he looked the last few days. I already gave him a 50%+ water change as I suspect ammonia toxicity. Any suggestions for treatment or other ideas as to cause. He's a little bloated and is "floaty"

why do you suspect ammonia?

ammonia would be a tank thats not cycled, or lacking proper filtration to remove.

why do you suspect ammonia?
Because there is a thread about gar illnesses and it describes the bent back like he has. Plus I don't do routine water changes, he's alone in the tank and it is way over filtered. Had him for nearly 8 years without water issues but perhaps now I'm having one?

do the water tests, API fresh water master test kit. but established that long I dowt ammonia the issue, long term nitrate sure.

do what you can do, once you have done that rest up to the fish. at 8 years and not being vigilante with water changes, and no offence meant there, he has made it a pretty long time.

It hasn't been 8 years with none lol. Just not good frequent ones. Also, I'm not easily offended, I get it.

I never said none, just not vigilant. :) Glad to hear not easily offended. allot of times giving advise and trying to help becomes a personnel attack to the OP, and that is just not the case. your honesty is much appreciated.
