Unique firemouth?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thorichthys pasionis are another nice fish.
The one shown in the picture below does not do the fish justice. They have some really nice yellows and greens to their flanks and are another alternative to firemouths.

Whatever species you decide on,I would suggest you keep them in groups. They live in groups in the wild and the behaviour and interaction is fascinating to watch.
Here are 20 thorichthys meeki in 7x2x2.

Cool. I like those. Thanks. Is the 7x2x2 yours?

Those Thorichthys ellioti/maculipinnis and helleri are awesome looking. You're giving me some things to think about for sure.

Are they more of a bottom or mid water swimmer?

They swim at all levels but spend most of their time sifting through the substrate like geophagus species do.

Sorry for the terrible pic but I think I may have got lucky. I picked this guy up for $5.99 at the LFS. I just put him in the qt so I'm sure he's not close to being colored up. I don't think he's a regular firemouth. What do you think?

That's thorichthys meeki a regular firemouth.
It's a very nice firemouth. Some firemouths are over bred and loose some of their beauty.I often see very pale washed out individuals for sale.
If you source some that are close to their wild origins they are much nicer fish.
The colours of these fish can also vary depending on it's mood.
I would be very happy with your firemouth it looks like a very nice fish.

Cool. Thanks. I guess I'm just used to seeing real drab ones in the big box stores. This one really popped when I saw him. I should have written down the name but next to him was a "3 spot" firemouth maybe? I'll have to go back and check him out. He wasn't nearly as colorful at the time though.

Never heard of a 3 spot firemouth. The only common name I have heard is firemouth.
If your interested in this genus it's worth knowing the scientific names. It makes identification much easier.
The only difference you will find in firemouths(thorichthys meeki) will be one's with catch location, they will look basically the same but some may be redder or paler or more elongated depending on where they have evolved. But basically a firemouth is a firemouth.
