Changing from dual hobs to dual canisters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not the best pics. I suck at photography lol. But u get the idea of how hobs looked really bad on my tank. Especially on my kitchen side where all you saw were two huge boxes with wires hanging off of them. Now. The only thing barely visible are the input/output tubing from 1 of the canisters.

I would just hook everything up on the wall end of the tank to get it to look really clean. I wouldn't even use the spray bars, but just the 90deg elbows. Have both elbows, just below the surface, shooting the water the length of the tank. This way, you'll create a loop current, whereby the top half of the water column flows one direction, and the lower water column flows in the opposite direction, back towards the filters' intake tubes.

I don't bother getting too fancy with filtering pads. I just use the course pad that comes with the Sunsun and fill the rest of the tray with Poly-Fil(polyester pillow stuffing). I put this tray on the very bottom of the canister. The other trays, I fill with ceramic media.

On the wall end I have the output/input of 1 canister, both 300 watt heaters and a power head kind of hidden with the fake plants. That way all u see is the 1 output/input of the 2nd canisters. I like your idea of removing the 2nd spray bar to make it dissappear, I just figured I'd get better flow and aeration with the spray bar.

Ya. So far less than 24 hours hooked up and I can tell a difference in water clarity. And I don't even have the best bio-media or sponges in there yet. Need to recover the loss of money lol. I'm gonna run it as is for probably a month and then when it's time to clean it, I'll pack it with the best media. (I'm thinking bio-home).

Tray 1. Coarse/med/fine foam
Tray 2. Half filter floss/half ceramic
Tray 3. All bio home
Tray4. Bio balls. Maybe half bio balls half bio home.

Let me know what u guys think/would change

I have a mixture of Biohome, siporax, and Cermedia Marine pure. It's nothing special. If I remember correctly, Seachem Matrix is much cheaper. Save yourself some cash.

I picked up a ton of ceramic rings off EBay for dirt cheap. I've been using it for well over 2 years now with no issues.

Ya. I was just checking online prices for biohome. 60$ for 2 kilos??? Dayuum...i would need two bags that 120 bucks. Might stick with packing it with more ceramic

My wife already wants to kill me for the slew of money I'm putting into the tank. (Even tho I always catch her petting my oscars or staring at the tank lol)

Btw my stock is as follows mostly juvis

1 tiger oscar
1 albino tiger
1 jag
1 dempsey
1 common plexo
1 senegal bichir

The rest are smaller dithers that don't create a ton of waste

4x giant danio
4x silver dollars (not red hooks)
2x angelfish from a previous small tank.

I figured the danios would be lunch already but they seem to be too fast for all the predators

I'm sure I'm overstocked?
Hopefully this extra filtration will help. Tho even with the small hobs my parameters were always good.

Yeah, I replaced a ton of ceramic media just because it was several years old and felt it was time to replace it. Decided to try the fancy stuff. It ain't that fancy.... lol

Not sure where you are, but Great Wave Engineering has it for about $90 for 4 kilos shipped. With that said, you can get a gallon of Matrix for like $30 off Amazon.
