while yes, genetics does play a part, it certainly can be helped. Being dominant over other cichlid tends to increase the humps. Also having a female tends to help, maybe add a mirror and see how he deals with that, giving him something to be dominant over can help.

Hes already too big and no kok. That means he has very poor kok gene. Yes I guess we're both right but that fish in question won't have any good kok. I use those tricks all the time but doesn't work on fish with bad genes.
As MP said, the nuchal hump is a dominance feature. In nature they can come and go with seasons, territorial and breeding dominance, and are simple water filled sacs.
Though it may be that FH breeders have chosen the largest hump gene to breed into a line, if another alpha male enters, and takes over the area, the hump on the less dominant one can easily disappear like a nerds flaccid penis in a biker bar.
By the way, that is as far away from a ram, as an oscar from a JD.
