Hello everyone,
haven't been on here in forever, but if you do know me i own a real paroon shark. Got him when he was about 1.5-2 inches now he is about 20 inches and going on strong. Ive been to hell and back with him, from times when he has ate all my fish in the tank including 4-5 inch silver dollars. lol. but he is getting to the point of an upgrade real soon. I know spring and summer is on the way. I have been thinking about putting a pond in the back yard. My big question is if I do proceed with the pond, will my paroon be able to survive in it during the winter season here in New York?

Absolutely not and I'm not too sure having your paroon out there during the hot months would even be advisable. The temperature fluctuations from morning to night might be too much for the tropical paroon to put up with for very long.

You could try indoor, or build a greenhouse, or even better a shed around the pond. But krichardson nailed it

Wait don't paroon sharks get 10 feet and 600+ lbs? Any pics of your catfish?
They can, and usually they get pretty big. However it's rare for them to get 10 foot in captivity mostly because they will get stunted at a young age.

It sure is doable if you do it (in terms of insulation) like Ted did in Seattle - a yearround tropical pond with minimal heating bill http://www.anythingfish.com/images/Ted/PhotoGallery/TedsPacu2400 Construction Photos.htm

Read up on it. And on the 8000 gal.

It didn't last but not because of the cold. Because of the thin glass.

Don't people get to 8'? ;) Why did I build my house with 8' ceilings. What was I thinkin? I'll be literally scraping by... Kidding but seriously I am not aware of a paroon larger than 3'-3'5' currently kept by a hobbyist (that's a pretty sad state of affairs, huh?) or even one breaking 5' in any given Public Aquarium.

Anyone?

Not that I know that much. Just speaking for my experience.

I believe TLkmDN's is around 5 foot. It's a BIG fish that's all In know. Then again it's in a 60,000 gallon pond

Hmm, I thought it was a 5 footer for some reason. Even a 3 or 4 footer is quite the fish though. It seems like when they are juvies they grow FAST though - over an inch a month. Potential to get 16"+ in a year as juveniles.

Definitely a good fish for a pond! I plan on getting one once I build my pond
