using water from the ocean

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wonder if you can buy rays debarbed
The barbs just grow back.

You could have part of the tail removed from above the barb and the tail wouldn't grow back but it's not exactly an ethical procedure.

If you're that worried about a barb you should probably be collecting collecting pillows.

You bring up a good point, very few people are stung by their rays - those who do are being idiots when they get stung.

And you are also true that they will grow back, you could obviously retrim them, which I feel is unnecessary unless you are doing a touch pool or something of the sort

Do you think there is a way of puting a protective covering over it ?

Yeah. It's called growing a brain and a pair of balls.

But actually it isn't a good option. The covers help attract fungal infections and add unnecessary stress.

I SERIOUSLY disagree with that statement. Taking the time to make sure your accidental catch goes back into the ocean safely because you just spent over 5 minutes unhooking and untangling it from a net and now you are concerned for it's life is not necessarily "being an idiot". I didn't actually "own" that one....it kinda "owned" me.

There are people who get stung for no reason apparent to humans, like the fella who got stung by accidentally bumping his ray with a siphon hose.

Trust me, Stingrays are as unpredictable as sharks

I had a 40 gal years and years ago that I used local salt water to refill. without knowing much about salt water aquariums I simply put a line of electrical tape on the side of the tank and before each water change filled it to that mark with fresh water then changed ten to twenty gallons with what ever I brought home. I kept it for a year until a winter power outage killed it. The lumpfish was one of the coolest aquarium fish I have ever kept though.
