My fahaka w/ best friend...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My fahaka, and my channa fireback. They seems too tolerante eachother, they share tank with a fireel, spotted gar and ancistrus. Never had problems with them. The badest of them is the snakehead, he can bump into the other with the head if they Come to his spot. My toughts Is that you need too give all the fishes thier own space, good vegetation and hideing spots, introduce them as juvinile, not feed much living Food to prevent agresion, luck with the fishes temperament, and dont let them go to hungry hehe.

^ how long has that combo worked for you and how big is the tank??

This is my fahaka with his friend the rainbow snakehead... The snake would get his tail nipped occasionally but he would regrow fairly quickly. They were normally good mates and sleep next to each other....

..and this is what happened to the new rainbow snakehead I put in to pair with my original one. Do you think the fahaka got jealous? Cause when the new snake went in they both slept at the other end of the tank to the fahaka. Then after the massacre my original snakehead came bs k t the fahaka!?!? It's like some twisted domestic violence plot!

Totally agree with the 'don't let them get hungry' strategy, my fahaka is quite peaceful unless she goes unfed.. Such as when I go on holiday.. When that happens anything that fits in her mouth is dinner. I think the policy of keeping them with other large aggressive fish (cichlids etc) works best as I would characterise my fahaka as 'hungry' not really aggressive... Accept the above snakehead.. That was just a crime!

The tank is 600L. The snakehead and the fahaka has been together for 3months. The fahaka and the other fish has been there for 6months. He/she seems peacefull but, the fish is still young so you never know.

The fahaka is a killa hehe, sad it ended like dat. How long did you have them in the same tank? Did you give them, their own hideing places ore caves? I have often toughts about what i am gonna do when i go on holidays, maybe i Come home to a emty tank and a super fat fahaka staring at me...

Don't want to be mean, but hope you got larger tanks also setup at home, since with a Fire Eel, Gar, Fahaka and Snakehead all in the same 160G tank you will eventually have problems... as you said they are still young, but from experience i can tell you as a Fahaka gets older and starts taking up more area to feel comfortable, they can become quite aggressive to anyone that starts getting too close too often, or when they try and steal food from your puffer...

I remember when i stared seeing my fahaka stalking tank mates, i would literally be at the tank pointing at her telling her off till she sort of learned to not attack any tankmates if i was watching, but if there was food in the tank, or they started annoying her, she was not shy to let them know whether i was there or not...

So yeah, just be sure to keep an eye out on how she does as all of them grow coz i've even heard of Fahaka's living peacefully with a selection of tankmates for up to 10 years, and then suddenly one day decide to go on a murderous rampage killing everyone in the tank...

Dude! I thought it was just me that stood by my tank shaking my finger and scolding at my Fahaka like a naughty school child! It's seems to work tho!!

Fahaka really are my favourite ever fish, she is like an aquatic dog... And their 'expressions' are amazing.

^ Yup, mine used to change to different colors based on her mood, so i could always tell how she was feeling from angry / scared / happy / sad... plus the way they look at you when they know they done something wrong is priceless...
