pike cichlid questions

I have her with a 11" wild oscar from venezuela and a 7" green terror in a 8 foot 240g tank. She rules the tank.

I couldn't really say about the species you mention, the Uruguayan's grew slowly, perhaps because of the winter cool downs, and didn't out grow the tank as quickly as more tropical species might. None of the species I had surpassed 8".

All four fish would eventually get to around 14". I really don't know if that's considered too much fish for a 125, but I'd imagine it's at least pushing the limits... interested in any opinions.

I'd get a 6 or so saxtilis group pikes and enjoy the show. Wait til a pair forms and swap the other pikes out for some dithers. Pretty easy to spawn and with a smaller species like that, you could see some very cool natural behavior in a 125. Some very pretty fish too

I thought the large pikes are pretty difficult to spawn. I've done some research on the atapabos but no first hand experience

Saxitilis pikes look cool. I will definitely consider them.

The problem I'm seeing with most of these pikes is either they are not available anywhere, or they are super expensive.

Another reason to look at pikes from the sax group. Most can be had in the $20-40 range and really do well in moderate size aquariums.

One side note though, you will probably never know what exact species you have, if that bothers you.

i recently got a young pike cichlid. not sure what type but its one of the larger green species. Anyways mine does fine and is the baby of the tank at 3 inch and is in with a jag, Oscar, and lima shovelnose. my oscar (average oscar, always hungry and not too aggressive) is getting big too at around 7 or 8 inch and doesn't bother him. who knows tho you could have an aggressive oscar. my pike even bullies my shovelnose who is bigger than him. my opinion on pikes is that they can hold there own even against bigger fish, you never know till you try I guess. set up your tank with enough territories for them to hide should help too. pike cichlids are interesting fish, I would recommend them to any cichlid lover. good luck!
