Well water/whole home water filtrtion

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since you are in the planning stages of the new home and the well you definitely have time to research. The local health department should be a great resource for finding out more information on well water treatment in the area. Different localities require different treatment of private water systems.

The company that will be drilling the well should also be a wealth of information and will provide you with a copy of their report.

I would get estimates from at least three different brands/manufacturers before choosing a system that you need.

I have a private well that was installed (previous owner) in 1981 and it's 135 foot depth with a submersible pump. When I bought the house in 1993, the existing softener was broke so we had a couple vendors come in for estimates. The water report came in with a hardness of 18 GPG (grains per gallon) or 308 PPM of CACO3 and clear Iron of 2PPM. We ended up buying a Kinetico Model 60 water conditioner (softener) that runs the whole house. The unit does have a bypass installed so we can use raw well water for our aquariums. The only other equipment installed is a pressure tank and whole house water filter which needs to be changed a few times a year. No problems using the treated (softened) water for drinking, bathing, cooking or washing. The local health department didn't require any water treatment at all; I'd post their test results but can't find the report.

Sorry for the long winded post but until you know the water test results, I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Double post sorry

Double post sorry

Not long winded at all. The more info the better.

My wife will be going down in a few weeks. Told her to stop in the model home and fill a bottle of water for me to test with some of the api stuff i have.

So my wife was able to get a water sample from the model home (located on the same street) and it looks to have 80/160 ppm nitrate (cant tell), 0 nitrate, and .25 ammonia out of the tap.

Obviously the independent testing will be more accurate as this was done with an api liquid test kit. Sent an email to pelican water purification to see if the nitrate filter (ion exchange) will be able to handle this. I hope this doesnt mean my fish keeping days are over

My well water comes out at 15ppm nitrate. You shouldn't have ammonia maybe reading wrong?

Could have read it wrong but damn ! 80ppm out of the tap. One of the companies i have been talking to says their system can remove up 110ppm of no3
So there is hope. Checking with other companies later in the week

Ya that's crazy. My old house with well water was around 30ppm from tap. Fish were ok but never had great quality from the start. My son on the other hand..... :)
