Cichlid for 3ft 50G

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very true...Im looking for something in the 6-8" range I suppose....smaller end of the spectrum if it is in a pair.

Very nice looking fish BTW.

panamensis.another crypto.i used to keep some smaller africans...julies,shell dwellers is another idea.also many kinds of african riverine cichlids kribensis and those in that family

I don't think any central american cichlids should be kept in tank smaller than 4 foot.
I would look at fish like keyholes or some African shell dwellers. Some of the smaller acara species are also worth considering.

Some options for 6" american cichlids that are readily available and will fit in a 50G, from aggressive to pacifist:

Salvini
Convicts (my fav is pink convcits)
Jewel cichlids (my fav is red forest jewels)
Firemouth (my fav is ellioti)
Blue acara (my fav is electric blue variant)
Keyhole cichlid
Festivum

Personally, it depends what you want to see/achieve - breeding fry (in which case a convict pair wins hands down), proper mating behaviour and parenting, or a single showpiece fish (in which case I would recommend none of the above and get a GT/rivulatus).

A GT in a 3 foot tank sounds a squeeze to say the least.
Salvini males will kill a female in a 3 foot.
Jewel cichlids are highly aggressive and would need a four foot minimum.

Ive got a nice GT growing out in a 55G right now, Id rather leave her where she is.

Id prefer a breeding project but with Cons...Id never get rid of the fry. I want something I could actually get rid of.

How about Rainbow cichlids or Cryptoheros chetumalensis?

Looking for a mated pair of cichlids for a 3ft 50G(36Lx15Wx21H). I'm having a brain fog on what to stock as there are so many good choices. What would some of you all suggest? Not interested in apistos, rams, angels, etc. Would prefer an uncommon species that I could try my hand at breeding.

Any ideas?

Any of the Guianacara sp. that you can get your hands on. For being on the smaller side, they are some of the most interactive cichlids I've ever kept. Dont get much bigger than 4".
