Don't know too much about black belts but is yours a female since it has black dorsal spot? When I had vieja synspilums I could never tell unless they get bigger where I can vent them properly.
Not sure, but I was told I have a male due to the very defined "belt" and his coloration. Was told females have more black speckling thru the body and not as defined in the belt.
Mine's about 8" now. I've had him about a year and he was about 2" when I bought him.
I take bad pictures, so I uploaded a video. Fast Forward to 2:18 and 3:26 to see my Blackbelts--when the video finishes processing. These guys are wild caught from "Rio Bonano", wherever that is.
Yours looks like a young male.
You can tell by the slightly more pronounced cranial profile. The dorsal fins on male fish rise slightly higher than females do towards the end of the fin.
