Cleaning Purigen

Has anyone tried regeneration / cleaning Purigen with hydrogen peroxide? We are trying to eliminate bleach and other chemicals in our house. We have found that sodium percarbonate in most cases cleans as well, although not as quickly. Sodium percarbonate is basically dry H2O2. Also the same as Oxyclean without additives. I have been using it to clean my filter socks for about 6 months, and am happy with the results. I was going to clean about 20 liters this weekend and wondered if I was wasting my time. Bleach is effective and cheap. If it bothers you so much recharge your purigen outside. There are a lot worse products than bleach.

Never tried it harly but if it works please post the results.

For the socks do you soak them in the hydrogen peroxide ? If so how long.

I don't use actual H2O2. I use the dried form, sodium percarbonate. Same thing but with soda ash in it when hydrated. I don't soak, just put in washing machine.

Bleach is effective and cheap. If it bothers you so much recharge your purigen outside. There are a lot worse products than bleach.

Bleach is effective, cheap and TOXIC. Outside isn't the issue. Just trying to cut back on chemicals.

Can't be that toxic or they wouldn't allow millions of bottles of it to be sold each year. Bleach has been used since the 18th century. So now it is a problem?

I use sodium percarbonate for a lot of things. I also use bleach from time to time. sodium percarbonate is still a chemical and can be pretty nasty. The hydrogen peroxide released from it can be in solution at a higher % than one thinks and be pretty nasty stuff.

Sodium percarbonate does do a great job of getting parts clean, especially older saltwater parts. But once again in many ways that much h2o2 (I use hot water and dissolve a lot) is more dangerous than many other household chemicals. It reacts with many compounds.

You should ask seachem, I am curious. I suspect the peroxide will be harder on the purigen and not remove organics as well.

That's a kind of stupid statement. Rat poison is toxic and is readily available.
