Wet pet for a 35 hex

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Kribs are a good idea. Would they or a jewel kill cories? I want to avoid any spendy or exotic/ delicate species since it will be in my classroom

It's hard to say. Your limiting factor with bottom dwellers is the available floor space in a hex. If the cichlids spawn they will be laying eggs on the bottom area of the tank and leave no room for the corys because they will defend the nest area vigorously. I would ditch the corys in your situation.

+1 on the kribs...good breeding colours, and they will likely breed. Whats the footprint?

Worst case scenario you go the guppy route, or equivalent community fish; I'd just avoid species that are fast and active, as they tend to benefit from longer footprint space

Ctenopoma Acutirostre, the African Leaf Fish. With an African butterfly fish for the top. The cories and bn pleco should be fine for the bottom. Plant the tank rather heavily and add some driftwood and such.

Not unless he wants to go high end brackish almost marine...

Aso not to mention a GSP as adults get to a decent size so 3 in that size tank wont work in the long run...

Ive raised GSPs in fresh water, as long as your water source is hard, no problem. In fact I have raised them in brackish conditions as well. I've heard others advise about brackish but from my own personal experience its not required

Kribs are pretty passive fish.

Jewels are way more aggressive. I wouldn't expect much color from a jewel if it's the only jewel in the tank.

Do any of you think a single jewel cichlid would color up?

I would go a Jewel and 2 F Convicts/HRPs, Acaras and small Geos, angels and rams, Kribensis w/ Rams and Dwarfs will work, but no aggressive cichlids w/ Kribs, Gymnogeophagus balzanii, dwarf pikes, or go the other direction with Etroplus, or Neolamprologus , Julidochromis or Shell-Dwellers. Catfish suited for that size tank will be fine w/ any of those mentioned....wouldn't worry much about the other levels, just focus on getting your tank bosses to be compatible

The tank is about 18 inches across, I would like a single hardy specimen that will interact with the students and not get stressed about all the faces up close. All of you have given me some excellent ideas, thanks
