BP tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's a solid argument but my JD and parrot have been around for about 7 years and I'm gonna admit my water ain't the best for Central American cichlids

Bichers a good idea (smaller species)
Try another bp?
Could try to get a compromise on the water and try a JD but might want a slightly bigger tank maybe (parrots can get pretty big my largest is 8 inches)
How strong is ur filtration (they can get dirty)
Diet? And pictures plz

Also some convicts may work they aren't the largest but again compromise on the water

I'd just build a community around her, mine was fairly placid with everything; as long as it was smaller than her and not a cichlid. She wouldn't look twice at cory's, tetra's (bigger than neons), pleco's etc; I then tried adding another BP and she beat the s*it out of it
Hey update on ur parrot how is it any pics?

water parameters like that aren't going to make much of a difference (if any) for a convict or jack dempsey. try a lady convict. she won't get too big and probably won't be as aggressive a s a male will be.

Ya that's what I assumed but he was talking about something with soft water so I said that in response but ya convicts don't get so big and aren't super tough especially for big parrots

I'll try to get a pic or two....later today, dang, didn't realize it was that late here.

The tank is barebottom for cleanliness reasons. Only decor really consists of a large cichlid stone, a giant cichlid stone, a tiny piece of driftwood, and two 3 foot plastic bamboo plants that I use for floating cover. I should probably weight them down with something.

filtration is an Aquaclear 75 and a large azoo sponge filter rated for 55 gallons. Water quality is currently great.

I feed a varied diet. Omega one cichlid flakes form the base supplemented with omega one sinking pellets. Freeze dried bloodworms are also mixed in. Occasionally, like once every other week, she gets frozen bloodworms or spirulina brineshrimp.

She's become a bit of a recluse after the deaths of the gouramis and rehoming of the danios and african knives. I'm oping slight competition from another cichlid or cichlids will give her a bit of a push. I actually caught a tiny yellow bullhead today. It's about an inch and a half total. She didn't bother it, investigated it, but then left it alone. I'm going to move it out into my goldfish pond to grow out once it gets a little bit bigger.

I'm going fish shopping on this coming up Thursday. I've narrowed my choices down to another BP and some dithers, a JD, a female convict, or a severum. The thing is, as you'll see in the picture tomorrow, her mouth is fully functional. It's a bit misshaped, but it works well enough for her to crush the occasional baby crawfish treat and swallow live earthworms. Hasn't ever harassed another fish before.

That brings up another concern, what if I get a JD or convict and it beats the snot out of her? I wouldn't want that. Bichirs have been mentioned and are cool, but I'd have to be careful that they don't escape. I'm tempted to do a smaller bichir species and maybe a female JD or convict with maybe three or four rainbow fish and call it done, but I am worried about stocking.

I've been keeping fish for nearly 9 years now. Nine years this December. I've only ever lost one tank totally and that was due to a heater malfunction. But a few weeks ago, I lost all of my scaleless fish in another tank because of some sort of bacterial infection. I've had to take down most of my tanks as I got father and farther into college. Now it's just the pond, the 55, and a 10. I'm kind of nervous because the infection incident shook my confidence in my fishkeeping skills. I just want to try my best to keep my animals happy and avoid total disaster.

I recently had to break down my 90 gallon tank, unfortunately I don't have her at the moment :( How are yours?
Aww that's sad to hear
Well the 125 has been reshaped a bit
The female Midas personality changed for the worst after my largest kk parrot died and started beating on the others so I had to get rid of it
My FH and two of my bp were relocated to a 60 gal
My 125 now has my arowana, two of the bp, my JD, and the Angels that were with the arowana so that was a major change
I will update in the future and I hope u do too

Once again a solid argument
Ur set up sounds really well and will work
For my experience as long as the bp is bigger then the other cichlid it'll be fine so depending on how big it it u can try to get a smaller JD or other cichlid
Also u could try a few African cihlids with it cause they don't get very large and the bp will rule over
Bichirs are definetly nice to have around but u may want a smaller species not sure which are the smallest and imo I think bichirs would look nicer with some substrate but I used to run bare bottom too just cause all the waste
