Hey guys so like the title says I am getting my first fahaka this week. He is supposedly about 1.5 to 2 inches. I will know for sure when he arrives in the mail. Anyways, at that size, what type of snails should I be feeding him in order to help with his teeth? Also if I wanted to breed snails, what would a good type of snail be for me to look into?

At that size don't stress about its teeth. For now feed bloodworms, small pieces of shrimp, mussels, clam meat ect. You can still add snails to their diet just make sure they are eye size.

Once it gets to 4" that's when you should start feeding hard shelled foods on a regular basis to work their teeth.

I recommend ramshorn snails.

Also dont forget to treat your puffer for internal parasites, they almost always end up having them. Keep a close eye for stringy poop. Enjoy your little guy, they grow super fast.

Sounds good thanks! I had not heard about the parasite issues they have. How do I treat for that? Luckily I have not had to deal with parasites before in any of my fish so I know very little about them. How can I tell if he is dealing with these, is it just stringy poop or anything else I should watch for as well?

It may or may not have that issue. Most of the time they do though, so its always good to treat new fish as a preventive. Most obvious sign is stringy poop.

I use Prazipro, its completely safe for plants and your filtration.

Ok sounds good thanks. Do I just add it to the water with a water change and then not worry about it anymore, or should I treat multiple times?

I'd wait two weeks for your puffer to settle in first. I like to first treat the tank then once that treatment is over give the puffer 2-3 days of regular water then soak his food with a few drops.

Just a heads up, my little puffer when I got him, and even still at 7" after 3 months, will only eat snails and crayfish. I tried shrimp, worms, clams, frozen black and bloodworms, live blackworms and other frozen food including clam with no luck, but that was just my experience with 1 fahaka! Sometimes I can get him to eat chopped nightcrawler when mixed with snails.

I did worm him when I got him.

I trained my old fahaka to recognize anything i was holding in my small blue container was basicaly her dinner...

So after a while, everytime she saw me go pick up that container, she would know she was getting fed soon...

If you really are having problems getting your puffer onto new foods, soad the food first in a garlic extract to help get them enticed to try it... Normally once they reaize its food, then they are good to go...
