Mass Extinction :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My bet is the water had too many chloramines. I almost my whole tank and thousands of dollars of fish when I didn't check the temp going in the tank it was 60 degrees and tank was normally 80. Luckily no fish died even though most were Lop sided I freaked out took boiling water and got the temps to 70 within 15 min and they started to revive again from going into shock. I freaked out and not I triple check the water and that day I did a 80 percent change lol

Thanks guys. And I should have written my theory 1 better, but the city did in fact up the chloramines levels, I found that out after talking to them. And I guess adding a lot of prime didn't help.... So I guess that's what happened.

I'm sorry for your loss. It's temperature fluctuated or it's time to replace the filter cartridge on that whole house system. Your second theory, dirty filter, could be the culprit as well. I wash my filter weekly, monthly. With sump, I wash it at least once a year, and I'm talking about the whole sump, not just the filter fabric. I still wash the fabric on my sump at least once a month
Thank you. I actually replaced the filter cartridge for my house's filter about 3 months ago..

Ive heard of this happening before and it was chlorine/chloramine related I don't think anything else could cause instant death. In this case it was a chlorine tank that failed a whole bottle of prime likely would not have helped.....you need to have your water company come out and test your water at your house immediately levels of chlorine that high is bad for us as well

Yeah that's a good idea. I'll try and get someone from the city to com out and test my tap water. The city puts out a monthly water quality report as well. I've checked it for April, the one for May will be out next month. I'm waiting for that as well.

I'm sorry to hear this, that really sucks... I wish I could help but my guess is as good as yours. Don't let it deter you from the hobby. Question, what type of silver dollar is the spotted ones?

Thank you. And I'm not gonna quit the hobby because of this instant for sure :-). And the silver dollars are Metynnis Maculatus.

Rapid ph fluctuations can kill off fish, even if they are within the tolerance of the fish breed. Do a kh test. What happened to your fish is not your fault. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'll do a kh test for sure.

The fact that you did nothing wrong is what makes this so brutal. Good luck with the water company because it sounds like they are the culprit

You know I can't even blame the water company that much. The El Niño weather is Ideal for breeding mosquitoes and the water company wants to be safe than sorry I guess…

Just horrible,sorry to see this.
thanks rich, first it was the perch and then this. When it rains it pours I guess...

Ouch!!! That is horrible. Sorry for your loss...
Thank you

Sorry to hear your loss, but don't let it ends your hobby. The only parameter you haven't checked is chlorine. I suspect the water company added extra chlorine somewhere in the water distribution system, possibly due to pipeline construction and it is by regulation that any new section must be to sterilized with extra chlorine.

I would rule out anaerobic conditions in your filters because it happened to both your 240 and 135. Although it is possible for a dirty canister in your 240 to turn anaerobic in power off, it is nearly impossible for an open sump system in your 135 to go anaerobic.

Please call the water company to find out what happened and report back.
Thank you and I don't think I can quit the hobby. MFK all ways :). Yes the chloramines were high in the water.

skip to 30 seconds
:) thanks man.

I guess it is the chloramines... And I have an instant water heater installed to my house as well. The water temp is accurate to about a degree. I set it to 78.

You have reason to blame the water company. El Nino and mosquitoes control have nothing to do with treating tap water tha is distributed in closed pipeline. EPA regulations limit chloramine in tap water to 4 mg/l maximum, exceeding the limit is a violation can cause health effect on consumers. You should file a complaint to the water company so it won't repeat.

Oh no. That's a very nice collection you have to lose all of them. So sorry that happened. My guess is the water also. I too felt like quitting after losing my moray eel but didn't. Hang in there and gl

Chloramines require more prime to break down than chlorine afaik. I haven't used dechlorinater in a few years. If it was a high concentration perhaps the prime was insufficient, but I'm not sure if this is an instant kill. RD is good with this kind of stuff but I don't want to page him everywhere.

Sorry for your loss, I think it was chloramine. I don't think it was your filter, mine has been shut off too many times for longer without any ill effects.

Really sorry for your loss man.. Just wanted to put this out there. I've done my manual water changes of up to 50% and have had shifts in temperature of up to 5 degrees Celsius and major water chemistry changes without major casualties. I think fish in general are tougher than we think so in that light I believe it was probably the chloramines. Also noted I don't use any prime or any other conditioners. Again really sorry to hear your loss. Hope you slowly work back into into the hobby.
