My growout female GT sadly jumped last night so I have an empty 20 long grow out freshly set up and cycled. Obviously any medium or large growing cichlid can't stay in here long, but I don't want to break the tank down as I just got it set up so I'm going to grow something else out in it. The LFS has some nice stock at the moment and they have several of the fish I want for the 125 to live with my GT. I'm wondering which is the slowest growing of the fish listed below. They are all about 2" and I want them to be comfortable in a 20 long for 2-3 months. They will be in the 20 no longer than that time frame, I will have the new 125 set up very soon). This will be a solitary fish in a 20 long for grow out only. Part of the reason I want the slowest growing isn't just because of the little grow out tank, but because I want to start growing out juvies now for the bigger tank and I want to avoid size mismatches so I will get the slowest growers first and start now.

Chocolates

Severums (super reds and some golds both same species I know)

Salvini

and still toying with having an EB acara in my 125 too but not sure if conspecific aggression will be an issue with the similar looking GT.

Don't worry, the new fish wont jump I will never make the mistake of leaving a lid off overnight again if I can help it. I feel terrible about it.

With good water quality and a varied diet, the chocolates and Severums are going to be about the same. They will steadily grow until they hit about 6" then slow down.
Not as familiar with Salvini, but from what I have heard they can grow fairly rapidly as well. None of these guys are going to match an Oscars growth rate for example, but I wouldn't necessarily consider any of these guys "slow growers" not like the GT would've been.

I might move away from your selection...
How about an EBJD or a JD , they are slow growers , lot of personality

It's not really about trying to just find a slow growing american cichlid. I have a specific stock list in mind and wanted to know what the slowest growing of the fish I am interesting in stocking are so I can get a head start on growing it out. It sounds like chocolates and severums have a similar growth rate. My overall stock plan for now is a male GT, a chocolate, 2-3 severums, and a salvini which is kind of the wild card here because I know they may be too nasty for the rest of the fish in the tank but their smaller size may help.

Ended up getting a nice chocolate. The reds severums they had in stock were not the best quality as far as color and the salvinis were tiny and very shy. The chocolate is about 2.5" and was very bold and looked super healthy. I imagine it will outgrow the 20 long in two months or so.

I would avoid a Salving in that selection, just me though.
Whats the attitude like on your male GT and how large is he?

He's approaching 6" and seems very aggressive. Killed all the dithers I tried when I first got him and rejected the female I tried last week. I'm going to have to go with big fish that can hold their ground but don't provoke outright. I'm totally not opposed to keeping him alone if I need to but it would be cool to see him in a 6 foot tank with a few others.
