thanx, I thought this was a perfect opportunity to show the safe and correct way to handle catfish with larger mouths. This typically only works for our Flatheads and Blues - Channels just don't have big mouths, but overseas the Wels , Paraiba and Wallago, etc and the other beasts would hold true to this method also. Catfish are incredibly hardy and may stress a little if you keep them out of the water too long, but because they have sharp spines w/ toxic slime, most ways of holding them are "SAFE" as long as you don't touch the spines or gills.Frank Castle btw, that is a really nice catch

Also, I am against grabbing the gill plates on fish, it's still too close to the gills for my comfort, in most cases, I recommend fish-grabbers or a net will also give you enough grip to handle a slimy fish like a Pike long enough to unhook it. I have seen many people do the gill plate grab and they end up killing the damn fish because they have never been taught properly and they're just doing what they saw on TV.
Cu455 - what suddenly brought this topic of interest to you?
Yea, you can only lip-grip some fish like Bass, and Snook, then you have the other way mentioned, ie gill plate, body, w/e but I think fish tongs - a trigger-operating grabbing mechanism, basically is the way to go at least for fish w/ teeth. When you catch "too many" bass you get lots of cuts and abrasion from their teeth wearing away at you all day - we call it "Bass thumb", and the Cats do the same but usually it only takes a fish or 2, so grip-gloves are best for handling them. After a long day of catching Flatheads, your knuckles are so scraped up and cut, you look like you just went 12 rounds w/ Joe Frasier lolI was looking at the fishing thread and saw a lot of people doing it. I googled why people do it a found nothing. There were tons of pages how to do it but nothing on why. I always thought it was just the thing to do for pictures.
I don't fish that often maybe A couple times a year if I go at all. I always do the body hold.
