So I have a 240g 8x2x2.

Originally it was stocked with:

4 Silver Dollars
1 Breidohri
1 Salvini
1 Escondido
2 Festae ( both ended up being females)

The Salvini died about 4 months ago mysteriously with no sign of illness or aggression. The escondido had some sort of infection on it's back that I attempted to cure but was unsuccessful and then just last week I lost one of the Festae suddenly. Again, no signs or warning of any kind.

So now I'm left with a male Breidohri and the larger Festae. Both appear to be in very good health and eating well. Right now they are about 5", the Breidohri is chunkier but mostly due to genetics I think.

I'm looking for suggestions to add to the tank. Should I try a female Breidohri and male Festae or am I asking for trouble if I do that? I'm open to ideas and not opposed to going my original route of getting 1 of a few species so that breeding is less likely.

Or should I just leave the tank as is with the 'less is more' approach?

Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks

I have always wanted to try a breidohri harem, maybe one male and four females, that's what I would try, but at the moment I would hold on before you buy any more fish you have had a few unexplained deaths, see how the two you have in there go for a month before adding any more

As a separate suggestion, I recommend treating with praziquintel for parasites; which are often the cause of mysterious deaths

Thanks, I will definitely do that. None of them died after water changes. I did a round of API Melafix and a round of API Furan -2 to try and save the Escondido but it didn't work and he ended up dying after about 3 weeks of treatment.

The recent Festae death came about 1.5 months after the Escondido so I can't imagine it was related to the medication or anything. I had done several water changes since then.

I just bought Prazipro on Amazon. It'll be at my house on the 19th at the latest. Besides treaments, which i completely welcome all your advice, do any of you have stocking suggestions once the treatment for parasites is done?

Man, all kinds of stuff. Try to get a breeding pair of Festae, and whatever will live in that tank with them breeding. May work out, maybe not.

Or, you could wait a few months, and then add a couple of really small Trimac's and let them grow out. Hopefully, the Breidohri will maintain his size advantage and you'd end up with a Breidohri, a Festae ( or two? ), and a Trimac.

Or you could add maybe 2-3 different types of Vieja -- Argentea, Melanurus, Synspilum, Bifasciatus. Keep in mind Argentea and Regani grow much slower than other Vieja, so add them first, or get them bigger, trying to get all the fish reaching the 8-10 inch mark at kinda the same time.

You could add a small Midas and see how that works out. Same as the Trimac, get a small one so other fish are bigger and can compete.

Or, you could look at the 10,000 different types of Pleco's. There are some very cool looking place's out there if that's your thing.

Like the harem of Breidohri idea, you could also consider a harem of Herichthys--Carpintis like you had, or yellow Lab's, or the other Herichthys they're bringing in now.

Or you could go the MFK cliche route -- get a Jag.

Well, I've been away for a long time and thought I would share a picture of the Breidhori. He was quite a bit more Savage than anticipated. He took over the entire 240 at about 5-6 inches and here we are 2 years later.

See attached.
