From 135 to 240...still single?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think any one has advocated a single fish in a tank, they have just said a single vieja sp or a proven pair, there lots of other fish that could go in that tank with them, swordtails, fm,sd,salvini to name a few but IMO I don't think vieja community tanks work unless your talking around the 600 gal mark. I also would prefer to see a single large ca cichlid in a tank then lots of large ca cichlids fighting to survive each and every day

Being isolated for your entire life is possibly the worst torture imaginable. Fighting to survive each and every day?! lol

I'm very thoughtful about my fish and whether they have tank mates or not. Before I moved two months ago, I was able to have a couple 125 g running and ready should something happen in any of my other tanks. I kept everyone separate except for my established pairs, which were a completely different concern.
I dont have the room for mamy tanks now, and what I stock my new tank with is very important. Fish health, safety and happiness is number one. But I want the fish I want...
New plan-acquire 6-12 juvi Zonatus cichlids and hope for a pair for the 240.

Being isolated for a human would be torture, but we are talking about fish, and alot of sp live there life pretty much in isolation only coming together to breed so given a choice I would think some thing like a jag for instance would be less stressed on its own then in a tank with 3 other male Jags and on that note if that jag showed a inch of weakness the others would kill it.

That's why it's important to sing to your fish and play gangster rap for the single guys!

As long as the tank is suitable furnished and there is activities going on out side the tank I don't think it's a problem, imo one of the best dither fish for large aggressive ca cichlids is another tank in line of sight with a pair of large aggressive cichlids

Lol...ya know, you're absolutely correct! They know more about what's going on around them than most credit them for.

Personally never had any such issues. My cichlids all speak to each other (fin flapping, etc), they don't fight. I had a problem once with a big oscar disliking an electric blue jack dempsey, so took him out for a few hours, put a mirror against the side of the aquarium, put him back in and it was fine after that!

I love oscars, but why are they always jerks? Also, Chillz23, if you ever have to pull a fish from a tank, with no more scales or fins, you'll think about who you put together.

If it works for you well done, I have only seen one ca community tank that is over 5 years old the rest work for a bit but eventually implode very quickly and with out warning, so I am not saying it cannot be done but it is extremely rare that it achieved

It takes a degree of common sense. You have to watch/monitor them and adjust as necessary! Haha oscars are jerks but that's why I love them! I put my fenestratus in yesterday morning with the jag, oscars, green terror, red terror, JD, etc and they are absolutely fine!
