Monster fish on a budget

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You need a long and wide tank for those. And i think 125 is a tad small. Not quite sure though
Yeah, I'm not planning to keep it in there for life.
If you get a jardini there are not many other fish you'll be able to keep with it, so that'll limit your expenditure on fish somewhat
So I hear, but that's fine. I was planning on having just one Jar in the tank.

EDIT: Also, is a 72.5 X 18 X 23.375 inch tank enough for a Jar (as a grow out)?

Best way to save money is buy a used aquarium, but I personally don't like used aquariums.

My preference with $600-700 would be to buy something like a new Aqueon 125 for $400. Spend the rest on 2x4s to build a stand plus plumbing and filtration. There are cheap ways to get filtration such as using plastic storage totes and drawers... lots of DIY articles and videos on how to do it. You could definitely get a nice 125 gallon setup with a new aquarium for $700.

Definitely hit up Craigslist on a daily basis and look for deals in your area. I usually search for "aquarium" and "fish tank" in separate searches. Then sort from newest to oldest and look down until you recognize something from the last time you looked. You can find crazy deals on Craigslist. For example, I got on it one time and there was an ad up for a 150. The guy still had it up and running with the stand, filters, lights, everything. However, his heater had gone faulty and killed all of his fish. He wanted it gone and gave it all away to the first person that came to haul it off. All of that, for FREE. Unfortunately, I didn't get it because it was gone by the time I saw it. Lol

Just buy little bits and pieces at a time and spread out your purchases if you need to. You will end up with a better system than if you try to skimp on stuff. It might take longer, but in the end, I think you will be glad you waited.

As you pointed out use "aquarium" and "fish tank" for keyword searches however an additional little trick I have found that sometimes gets different results are using "fishtank" and "fish-tank" versions of the spelling too.

I'll try that too.

You said just one Jardini in the tank. Jwh ment tank mates. Jars can have a nasty demeanor. I had a 16" jar tear apart a 12" channa pluero (snake head) so jars won't play so well with other fish. As for tanks listen to everyone else craigslist is a godsend. You can find some awsome deals.. the best thing is start small cuz it really sucks to have thousands invested (even you say your on a budget you will have a lot invested over time) and have your tank crashed and you loose hundreds or even thousands of dollars in fish and it can be something as stupid as uneaten food. If you can't tell the symptoms you have a freezer full of dead fish. Yes you can grow out a jar in a 125
