Going to lose my mind

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is what was coating the tank and filter inside. You can see where I wasn't able to clean the bend in the filter intake.

They make long, flexible brushes of many different sizes and shapes, if you really want to clean those intake pieces fully. I have a set of them and use them on lots of different aquarium related items. Pretty cheap too for a set.

It would happen literally overnight like that?

How do I treat it?

Yup, most certainly can build up that quickly...

As for treating, honestly patience will be your best friend here, since the tank needs to settle again...

I would personally monitor the parameters and if they dont spike too high, leave it and see if it clears...

If the time comes for your regular water change, and tank water still has not cleared up, just do a regular water change and keep monitoring...

Finally, if you want something to really help polish your water but dont want to invest in a UV sterilizer, look into Purigen by Seachem...

Yes! I've been looking for these. Nothing at the local hardware store. Might check out Wal mart.

I blasted the tubes with my hose and the stuff didn't come out, so I'm pretty confident it's not getting into the tank water and making it cloudy. I will still clean it when I get a brush.

Thanks a lot. I am going to get a kit to monitor my water parameters. I usually take it to the LFS once in awhile to check but this is a different situation.

I just want clear water so I can look at my tank and not be annoyed lol and so I can take better pics of my fish!

Picked up some beneficial bacteria in a bottle on the way home. Tank is worse than this morning. Going to have some patience and give it about a week of adding the good bacteria and letting things settle again.

Doesn't seem to bother my GT. He has been put into a bucket twice since coming home a week or so ago and I feel really bad about stressing him out but doesn't seem to phase him that much lol. Always begging for food as soon as I walk into the room.

You can see the white haze in the pics below. I'll take a lengthwise shot next time. Shows really how cloudy it is.

Doesn't look too bad.

Also, don't add the bacteria in a bottle while you're waiting for it to clear. Just leave it be aside from light feedings.

Agreed it doesn't look too bad, compared to what i was expecting....

And i mentioned before, if you really want to polish your water off to make it really crystal clear, use purigen, that stuff does miracles to water clarity...

I should have taken a shot from the side. You can barely see to the other side of the tank.

Looks a bit better this morning.

Will this purigen harm the fish in any way?

I also want to comment that I really think it's awesome that this hobby is so full of people who want to share their knowledge and experienced to help others out. Really don't know if there's such a sense of community in other hobbies but I'm always so impressed by the number of people on forums like this one who are so knowledgable and willing to help. You hardly ever see people being jerks or condescending to each other. Love it.

For me whenever I do a big water change the water gets cloudy but the next morning it's crystal clear. Polyfil is what makes my tank clear but you said that didn't help.

I know certain types of sand can make your tank cloudy for a while. I would let it settle for a week to see if it gets better. Looks pretty good.

I have 10-20 gallon tanks solely on sponge filters and they always look clear after water change. The sand and sponges carry all my bb and at times I even forget to add prime before adding the water but do it after.
