I purchased 6 red turquoise discus 3 days ago. they all looked healthy and were doing well, However I just noticed one of the six is missing its entire pectoral fin on its left side. The fish has no damage and the fin is not clamped back like I've read can happen with discus but instead looks like it wasn't born with one of its fins. It appears this fish lacks the joint where the fin would usually connect to its body other then this it acts normal swimming around and exploring its tank with the other fish. I'm just wondering if this can happen and how common something like this is? Also in my case will this have a negative affect on my fish now or later in life if it lives to adulthood? The fish is swimming upright fine you would never even know the difference Just let me know. Thanks

I'm sure it can happen from birth but it could of been an injury that healed over. Either way, congrats on your pick up!

I would question the source. I can't say what the outcome will be but it would be good to know if it was a birth defect or an injury. As long as it is eating well & swimming upright w/ out laboring, I wouldn't cull it. "T"

theirs no way I'm going to cull this fish, he's one of the brightest colored discus from the batch and he's getting around and eating fine
