Young nastie. Male or female

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The first time I had haits, I got 12, and lost all 12 due to what I believe were too low temps (high 70s), and keeping them in a community situation. I next picked up 6 and lost all but 1 female ( the one in my photo), she killed all the others. Then I finally found her a suitable male.
If I were to do it again, I would divide the tank with egg crate, giving each juvie a section of its own to grow out in, putting a female in a section between two males, and watch to see which she accepted.

I divided it into sections this afternoon. Put the one in the photo in the middle. Of the other 2, 1 appears to be a male. She can't get through the egg crate, but the other 2 still can. I knew they were sensitive fish going in, and expected some loss. I think you are right, dividing from the start sounds like the best recipe.

Very nice looking female.

i started this thread because I could not tell if this nasty was make or female. Lol! Can you please share your experiences mr freshwater predator? I am obviously not an authority on the haitiensis. Thanks for the replies!

I've kept a large number of these beauties over the years and I've had great success with them. Duanes is an experienced keeper as well. But in my experience I've noticed that the majority of females that color up have distinctive white caudal finals, whereas males caudal fins will be a dark mixture of black and greys. Most hobbies yes can't tell them from females and try pairing with a larger male that ends up killing the unknown smaller male.. Divide with a known male and observe behavior and color changes
