F1 Honduran Jag Sexing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe both are female. I have photos of my F0 pair from an inch on if you want some comparison. I don't know about all locales in Honduras, but the fish from LaCieba in. The Rio Danto have blue...but it's along the spine in the males.

First photo is a female. Second male. Then Juvenile pair.

Thanks Aquamojo - if you could share photos that would be great. I see your jouvenile male has pointed fins (both of mine are rounded for sure). At what size did they start getting pointed? I'm starting to lean towards the larger one being a female as well and HOPING the smaller one is a male.

My first impression is also that are both females.
On another tangent.
The thing about trying to ID by color in any cichlid is very nebulous.
A cichlid that lives in a pond 50 feet from another pond, that may have been connected 100 or even 20 years ago, but not connected today, can have noticeable color variation pond to pond.
So trying to ID by country with color is often haphazard at best.
And especially if humans have altered the ecosystem.
Although managuense are endemic to Nicaragua and surrounding areas, they have been transplanted (because they are tasty) as far north as Mexico (and even Florida).
This means they could be interbreeding in Mexico with northern Parachromis species like freidrichsthali confusing things even more.
Here in Panama, peacock bass are found throughout Lake Gatun, stocked long ago by man. I doubt what species were brought was farthest thing from anyones mind, so the lines that separate true species may at this point be useless.
Thanks for the input!

both look female ATM, but as stated, at 5 to 6" you will know for sure. And yes, females will pester females, males will pester males, and any other configuration you can think of.
Appreciate it - I'll post update pics in a month or two - at the rate they are eating (absolute pigs) they should grow fast

Not sure what you mean by "pointed".

Thanks Mo - I think I will likely spend hours looking at all of those beautiful pics - could probably spend days! Regarding the pointed, I'm talking about the dorsal and anal fin - looks like only your male is not rounded, but maybe doesn't get pointed or lose it's rounding until the 6-8 inch mark?

the dorsal on the make gets a trailer while female is rounded, but that changes for the female as well, its just not as long per say,

can see in this first vid from almost 2 years ago her fins are just starting to loose the rounding in the back, while his already have the trailer. If you like tool crank it up!

now 3 months ago can see is no longer rounded at all, they are both WC, ones in honduras and ones costa rican.

This is my first time having the Honduran Jags - I am finding them more colorful and much more aggressive than the other ones. Can anyone sex these at this age? The first is 3" tops and chases the one in the 2nd pic 2.5" tops even though they are in a 300 with tons of hiding places - that makes me think they may both be males. But the first one has always been more golden and the second one has always had more purple, which makes me think the first could be a female. I know they are tough to sex at this age but would appreciate any input.View attachment 1196796 View attachment 1196797
Very cool fish. Even at that little size, jags are impressive.

Greg, beautiful fish and I do like Tool. At what length did you male start showing the start of trailers? Also, I assume you tried the tank w/out a divider? I've never had WC, F1 or Honduran before and I've always had gentle males. Maybe that is about to change for me w/ these guys/gals?

he started looking male at about 5" , ya I tried but after they started spawning there was no way they could stay together between spawns. Male to much of a wife beater.

OK, it has only been six weeks, but they are changing fast! The first one is now approx. 5.5" - looks to me to be female for sure. The second pic is approx 4.5" - I think female but still hoping for a male. The first one continues to be more yellow and the second one continues to be darker and have more blue in the fins. They have zero interest in each other. It's funny to watch the little one pick fights w/ cryptoheros - I guess if you can't be #1 in the tank, #19 is better than #20 :-) Jag 1 9-21-2016.JPG Jag 2 9-21-2016.JPG
